Versatile off road open utility/camping trailer build

The frame is 3” channel, which was chosen primarily because of cost over rectangular tube with steel prices being what they are, but it’s a decent trailer building material IMO. I actually wanted a little bit of weight to this thing as it may only be carrying a canoe and mountain bikes when on...

Versatile off road open utility/camping trailer build

This thing has been a long time coming, and has been designed and revised in my head for a couple of years. Purpose #1 is to replace my decade old, heavily abused Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer. I own a finish carpentry business and have a 6x12 enclosed trailer and a dump trailer, but there are...

Convert a flatbed car hauler to enclosed camper?

One advantage of the car hauler setup is the ability to build a slide in “cabin camper” on skids. Not really ideal for general camping trips or overland travel, but for a hunting lease, lake property, etc it would be nice to just pull it off and still have the trailer for other uses. The cargo...

    Trailer vs vehicle track width?

Thanks for the feedback guys. After looking at it again today I realized I can only narrow it about 3/4” per side unless I want to grind the welds on the drop spindle or notch the Timbren mounting plate, so I’m not even going to mess with it. Been meaning to start a build thread before it’s done!

    Trailer vs vehicle track width?

Hi all, I’m in the process of building a combination utility/camping/off road open trailer to haul construction supplies, equipment, tools, and toys. In order to fit my zero turn mower on it, I need 54” clearance between the fenders, which makes the minimum track width I can run around 74...

    Fuel Economy for Overlanding

Not a G-Wagen, but my LR3 (6,000 lb AWD SUV with a V8) averages 10 mpg on slower sandy trails. From guys doing the TAT on motorcycles, 250 miles is about the max range you need anywhere in the US, which is the middle of Nevada.

LR3/LR4 Rhino OX hitch weld failures

Bummer to hear this, but if you stop and think about how tongue weight forces are applied it makes sense that they are failing. The top link should not be allowed to pivot, since it does all the vertical stress goes into the narrow section of the side plates where they attach to the piece that...

Anyone have a connect at Front Runner? Unresolved QC issues...

Might be annoying on a $1,000 rack, but nothing I’d hassle with removing and shipping it back for. It’s going to wear from items being on it anyways, and it’s aluminum underneath so it’s not going to leave rust stains on your car. Hit it with some Rust Oleum textured and move along.

    Old man-big brakes

If the trailer doesn’t have brakes, add those first. I pull a trailer (with brakes) almost daily, and find myself running up on stops in my wife’s car, it has 20” wheels and Brembo’s on it. My reply when she asks me if I’m planning on stopping “yeah, I’m used to the trailer brakes slowing me down.”

Lightweight Easy Up Easy Down Tent That May Be of Interest!

Neat design, but I don’t see it being waterproof or handling 15-20 mph winds, even when staked out. Probably fine for most recreational camping, but many don’t seem to give thought to if their “shelter” actually is one.

    Fiskers X7 hatchet: NO!

Placid, I had similar results when using a friends Gerber version. The blade shape may be fine for splitting soft woods, but it bounced horribly when chopping, I didn’t try splitting with it. Hultafors axes are my choice, though the price is substantially different.

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

The Poulan corded saw still listed on Home Depot’s site draws 9 amps, which isn’t a lot. Assuming you don’t have the ultra light 16 gauge extension cords, there’s no reason you couldn’t use 200-250 ft of cord. There may be some voltage drop, which isn’t great for the tool long term, but that’s...

    Cub Pack shipping options?

Would like to try out Front Runner Cub Packs, for $40 they aren’t cheap but I figured I’d give one a try. They have a note saying “subsidized shipping”, but when I put it in the cart it quotes me $36 to FL, only option being USPS priority. Figured I’d see if 4 were roughly the same shipping...

    DIY Winch in a Box.

Why the box? You can get a multi mount style receiver hitch with an Anderson connector. You’d have to have the box open when winching anyways due to heat, and alligator style terminal clamps would likely weld themselves to the battery.

    LR3 Key Replacement

This one worked for my LR3. Cut by local locksmith, programmed with GAP tool. The batteries will eventually fail to lock and unlock the doors, but will still start the car. The keys are easy to open with a screwdriver and replace the battery. FWIW I bought a key on eBay that claimed to work...

    2006 LR3 Head Gasket Issue

These engines aren’t known for head gasket issues. A quality repair shouldn’t have any future problems IF the engine wasn’t overheated that caused other (possibly invisible) damage. Used engines are available on eBay in the $1,500 range but most are going to be higher mileage than what you have.

Counts as clothing, right? Pup Collars

Gun dog supply. Will likely outlast the dog. Can’t count the number of times somebody found and returned him due to the riveted tag. Never take it off.
