So you'd rather not go there because you can't carry? wow. Does it occur to you that you don't need to carry in Canada? -Dan

Chrysler on boad with 54.5 MPG CAFE requirement for 2025. Fingers crossed

There are extremely few vehicles that have ever been released in Canada that don't meet US standards for mileage, emissions, crash safety, etc. etc. For all intents and purposes, vehicles in Canada *are* US vehicles, meeting the same identical regulations. -Dan

Canada :sombrero: Seriously though, what part of my comment about sometimes needing government regulations, even when they have impacts far and wide sounded like la la land? -Dan

The front page of ford.com very prominently has "Up to 40MPG" on the Focus and "Up to 33mpg" on the Escape. (There are no trucks on the front page) When you click "Trucks" and see the F-150, it lists price, seating capacity and MPG. I read into that MPG is now a more important consideration...

The Grand Cherokee will have the 3.0 VM/Motori Diesel in North America in January 2013. (They are doing a short run on the 2013 model year, then in Jan they will have the 2014 model year) On another note, almost all of the North American auto makers have committed to having a diesel in the...

So your anecdotal evidence shows nothing has changed much since the 50's, therefore you conclude nothing much is going to change in the next 13 years. With an attitude like that, you'll be right. Why not get behind the initiative and say something like: "I really don't know how they can do it...

Your whole assumption is that it's impossible to get > 20mpg out of a half ton truck with a high towing capacity. The old adage "there ain't no replacement for displacement" was coined long before variable valve timing, variable length intake and exhaust runners, computer control and high...

I believe Japan has some of the strictest mileage requirements in the world. Mandated by the government. You seem OK with the government regulating what chemicals can go in your food, but when we start talking about gas mileage regulation you want to bring up "oppressive socialism" and the...

For sure. Obviously the government needs to step in and regulate some things (what's legal to put in food, the size of a gallon, not using asbestos anymore) etc. Everyone has a different idea of "how much is too much". I personally think the fundamental difference in thinking comes down to "Do...

How do you feel about the national "do-not-call-list" ? Think about all those poor telemarketers who were put out business and can't feed their families now, just because the government stepped in. Sometimes, the government needs to step in and make regulations for the greater good of all. It...

I'm not saying that. I'm saying that in thirteen years you may very well be able to get a more powerful engine that gets much better mileage. As others have pointed out, the entire fleet average needs only to be 54MPG, so potentially the bigger trucks in the fleet will only need to get 30-35MPG...

Obviously they're not expecting everyone to drive a SMART car. I'm saying that Europe was already producing cars that get > 56MPG in 2009, so American automakers have 16 years to improve the technology, and get more and more efficiency, until it's viable to push bigger and bigger vehicles while...
