Tom Sheppard has picked a Jeep for his next vehicle

I drove a TJ solo from Alaska to Argentina ~ 40,000mi in 2 years. I never once wanted more space for gear, though I would have slept in it a few nights if possible. -Dan

Tom Sheppard has picked a Jeep for his next vehicle

I'm interested to see what he does about low quality diesel in the 2.8 VM. My understanding is the stock emissions setup won't allow it to run. -Dan

    Second Spair Tire

Right on, thanks. I chose not to go to Venezuela, partly because at the time of year I was there, Angel falls would have been a mere trickle. I heard the road in there is quite something :) -Dan

    Second Spair Tire

Do you have the specifics on where they were? I drove through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, and probably had ~10 flats for the entire 12ish months and ~20,000 miles. Every one of them was a nail or some kind of metal chunk actually stuck in the tread. None of them...

    AEV JK Six Pack

Dave from AEV just confirmed is uses the same stretched chassis as the doka. Funny how everyone thought the long wheel base of the doka was "great", but in "wagon" form it's horrible. It's a one-off and not something AEV is actively pursuing. -Dan

    AEV JK Six Pack

I had never thought of this idea, but it makes perfect sense after the DoKa. Once you have the longer chassis, you really just need a big hard top instead of a pickup rear. Very interesting. -Dan

New JK Stubby Bumper from ARB

I heard the 10th anniversary Rubicon may have a stubby pumper. I wonder if this is it? -Dan EDIT: HAHA on my typo. I'm going to leave it for everyone to get a laugh.

    Second Spair Tire

I would think long and hard about if you actually need to carry a second spare. I drove 40,000 mi. from Alaska to Argentina, and while I had plenty of flats, I never even put the one spare on the Jeep. Every flat was either slow enough to just get it patched in the next town, or the one that...

    Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

I'd love to, but I'm in The Yukon. It's a long drive and time commitment (even if I fly). Interesting. I've always like the design because of the huge amount of internal, bug and weather free volume it creates. (or I thought it did) Are you also talking about width at the bottom - i.e. the...

    Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

Wicked, DK. Thanks for all the information. I had been thinking about some kind of bedding strap system, it sounds like you have it dialed. I wish I could see one of these in person, but it's ~2500mi. one way for me so unlikely to happen soon. -Dan

    Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

Thanks for the awesome pics, that looks amazing. I'm wondering about the bedding setup. 1. Can you leave a mattress permanently "in" the roof, even when you fold it closed? (I imagine it's 4" high density or something) 2. How about bedding? (pillows, sleeping bags/blankets, can they stay when...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

That's not entirely true. The new emissions standards coming for 2016 in the North America market are extraordinarily close to the Euro Emissions. So much so, an engine that passes one standard will almost certainly pass the other with very little work. See the 3.0 Diesel coming to the Jeep...

Sleeping in the back of a JK

That's my plan exactly. Have the front passenger seat flip forward, and some kind of little shelf that folds "up" to fill in the newly created space. The center console will be in the way, but as long as only one person is over 6", I think it will work well enough for times when forced to sleep...

Sleeping in the back of a JK

That is sweet. Looking at your diagram, it looks like one piece is 28.25 inches and the other 31.75 long - for a total of 60 inches, or 5 feet. How can you sleep on that at 6 feet tall? -Dan

    Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

Ahh, very cool Thanks. I didn't realize there were three different "mounting points" for the awning. That's such a great idea - if you want to leave a side rear door open for access, you can put the awning over that door. If you want to leave the rear tailgate open for access, you can put the...

    Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

Hey Mario, Are there plans for an awning of sorts at the "back" to cover the open tailgate area as mentioned by DingusKahn? Thanks, -Dan
