Bumper
Bumper
I forgot to mention that in my craigslist surfing looking for trucks I came across an ad from Buckstop bumpers in Prineville, OR (About 3 hrs from me). They had some overstock scratch and dent bumpers they were selling at a hefty discount and I was able to pick up a Trail Ready...
Flares
I really like the AEV High Cut flares, but they are pretty pricey. However, I want to keep my CG low and so far only have 1.5" of lift. I was considering pulling the trigger on their flares and I decided to read their install instructions to see how much and where they cut the fenders to...
Tires
The next big step was figuring out tires. I really wanted to stay with a light truck tire, but just couldn't find anything that would meet the anticipated load requirements. The toyos come close a 4k lbs a piece, but the rear axle of my truck weighs in at 3800 lbs with nothing on the...
Suspension
I have gone back and forth quite a bit on the suspension. The 5500 isn't exactly smooth riding unloaded :-) I know I'm putting a 3-4k camper on the back, but I also plan to use the truck quite a bit as the 'farm truck' and would like it to be comfortable to ride in without the load...
The Beginning
The first order of business once Beefcake was home was to get the head gasket fixed. Reading up it sounds like this isn't an entirely uncommon issue with the 6.7 cummins. I recently swapped a 6BT cummins into my FJ80 and always do my own fab work so was happy for the opportunity...
Background:
So I've been lurking and learning for several months on this part of expo as I've been researching what type of rig to build or buy for a family expo rig. I've tossed the idea around for a long time...almost bought a 404 unimog in high school to take to the arctic circle 20 years...
This is the stuff I am using in my build, but as Terra Ops said, I think its too thin on its own. I am laminating up with plywood skins. If you choose to use it they adhere it with a special contact adhesive that would NOT be good for structural adhesion. I'm still testing my panel assembly...
Hi Carlyle. I'm trying to decide between 275's and 335's for my 5500 build. Would you mind sharing some of your thoughts on why you upsized? Any chance I can get you to post a before and after pic with the two different sizes? Have you been happy with life of the MPT's? What speeds do you...
Thanks!
Thanks TerraOps for the great posts! I love DIY and am excited about building my family expocamper and this thread is super helpful. I agree about making things with your own hands. Here's my garage built double pane acrylic window :-). It was great fun for my kids and I to make in out...
Thanks for the reply! I've been working with a couple alibaba vendors on windows as well :-) Do you remember which you went with? I found lamilux 1000 locally finally for 2.75 sqft so might go that route. I looked at having a box made in China via Alibaba but was just a bit too gunshy for that :-)
Thanks for the great documentation. I am heading down this road for my DIY camper as well, but am having a hard time sourcing the FRP panels affordably. The local supplier wants around $5 sqft for the panels. In your research did you find any west coast suppliers?
Looks really nice! Is that the shower door I see in one of those pics? Could you tell us more about that? I'm on the panel learning curve at the moment and forgive the noob question, but I've heard some FRP panels aren't very UV resistant and fade/chalk earlier than is ideal. I assume these...
Awesome family hauler and wheeler...just spend too much time on the pavement to justify keeping her around. I believe I am the third or fourth owner. Purchased at 158k miles from person who had it from 60k miles on. Here are the specs:
-Factory rear locker
-Front ARB locker
-Factory FJ80 Locker...
