I don’t follow this...it seems that it would be much better for the side to side alignment. Are you thinking the rear of the frame could flex enough to put the overhang into the front of the roof?
It seems fine. While the added weight is something to keep in mind, and I added the stiffer springs for it, it’s percentage wise not that big of a change. The rig weighs 5800 lbs. I believe the 6BT is around 400lbs more than the stock online six. I probably shed a few pounds going to the manual...
Selling my Cruiser to finance a expedition camper build. Very clean truck. Well sorted and built with the vast knowledge archived here. Absolutely awesome rig...just on to a new adventure :)
Stock truck:
1994 FZJ80 with 171k miles
Triple locked with CDL switch
No rust, only a few door dings...
Interesting. I've thought about doing the reverse...hinging at the cab and letting the rear float or at least be unpinnable if going on some wonky roads. I'm actually not going to use the flatbed in my system...it's just on there temporarily.
On the galvanized I used a self etching primer, on the bare steel a shop coat primer from Forrest Industrial coatings and top coat of Good old rustoleum satin black. Hope it all cures up ok!
I'm doing a build right now of something similarish and had planned on rigidly mounting until last week when I tested the frame flex of my Ram 5500.
I am reusing a shell and am unsure how much the frame I'm building will add torsional rigidity to the frame...so I'm starting to think about a...
Well...they are a very light press fit. You can easily tap them out. The idea is that they hold the wheel perfectly centered while the lugs tighten the snot out of the adapter/wheel sandwich. I had lots of debate with friends (machinists and engineers) about what holds a wheel in position in...
I think dodge uses a magna axle or something like that in the front...so could be different. I have .375 or .5" plate stacked behind the wheels and my track is darn close to spot on.
For the wheels...I sold a set to Cowpig...you might check with him and see if they are going to work out for...
Hi Java! I've read a bunch of your build too...thanks for commenting. My truck was 10x225 as well. I'm not sure if the Fords are the same, but on mine there was a stock dually wheel adapter that was removable on the front. This left a smaller ten bolt pattern that made it possible to build a...
Oh yeah...drives totally normal. I think most trucks have an inch or so difference between front and rear stock. Did my first freeway drive with the MPT's this morning and am shocked how quite they are. There is a barely distinguishable hum from them...certianly no more than the warn out...
I did have to build adapters. Also, while these are similar to mrap wheels, they are slightly different in that they have a more neutral offset. These wheels are also only 8.5” wide instead of the 10-11 of the mrap. I wasn't thrilled about running adapters until I realized from the factory...
Very cool. Mind if I ask a couple questions?
1. Why do the subframe instead of just putting the bed cross pieces flush with the sub frame? I'm sure you have a reason...just curious.
2. Some of my admittedly light reading on these mount systems has had me thinking about how I'd attach it to...
Thanks! I definitely have enjoyed reading up about your build. I can't recall what system you use...
I'd like the camper to be easily removable. If I do a three point system I think I'd fix it at the cab and let the back move. I was really looking forward to not messing with this or using...
Frame Twist
I thought I had convinced myself that I didn't need a three point mount system. However when I tested the tire clearance with the new tires by driving up a bank and looking at the back I'm not so sure...looks pretty twisty...
I'll have to give this some more thought...
Haha! You and me both! Should get some parts back from the powder coated this week. I’ve made up some of the composite panels and hope to get the box on the new frame in the next couple weeks.
Building the Frame
I now have the camper on pallets in the shop.
Once I had the old frame out I cut it up into pieces. Felt like I was running a real chop shop :-) I saved the slide mechanism and other things that seemed useful and will scrap the rest. Next I picked up some 6x2x.120 wall...
Camper
My goal for this truck is that it be safe and fun for my family of 4 to travel around in. I don't plan to do any rock crawling in it, but will likely end up on some less than awesome roads. But they will be roads. We also could potentially be in this thing for long periods of...
