I would recommend 4x4. These rigs are heavy and when they get stuck you are really stuck. 4x4 gives you a chance to get out of trouble but also you can get deeper into trouble but I like the having that option. If you don't go 4x4 (and even if you do), I would highly recommend a winch sized...
This was exactly the dilemma that led me to build my Fuso. How to carry bikes that was secure and out of sight. This is version 2.0 but the layout is same as the first version. Bikes are out of sight behind the teak doors and stay clean and dry.
Amk22 - I have a short wheelbase FG and I am in Beaverton. PM me if you would like to come out and see my truck. It might answer a lot of your questions. Here's more info on my truck:

Buckstopper
My flatbed is on a Fuso so it most certainly is spring isolated from the chassis or it would be a shattered pile of fiberglass and wood... Look Here for more info:

FWIW - I have had both slide in and a flatbed camper on a flatbed. Both Hallmark. The slide in had 9'-6" floor and the new flatbed model is 8' long. There is so much more useable space and open floor on the 8' model you wouldn't think it was smaller. Having the side storage was great but it...
Sounds like you may be heading a different direction but if you want to look at our Hallmark Flatbed Model you are welcome to stop by. Happy to talk flatbeds as well. You might want to look at what I did with our spare...those suckers are heavy so you need to have a plan for how to handle them.
Nope. Just know what the policy was for companies that I used to work with. Out with the old and in with the new straps every January. Mine are not exposed to the sun or wear and tear on a regular basis so I don't do it annually but I do inspect them each winter along with the rest of my...
One more thought on straps. Most trucking companies replace their straps each year because they degrade in the sun. Probably should take note of that and replace your straps if they get a lot of sun. Not sure that they need to go annually but if they start to look faded its probably time for...
I have to say that I always carry ratchet straps as part of my recovery gear. We got hit by a hit and run driver and our camper was pretty badly damaged (ultimately totaled out). I was able to use ratchet straps and duct tape it to make it habitable and safe to drive a few thousand miles home...
Stock Fuso bumpstops are basically hockey pucks so I agree that changing those out is a very good first step.
ATW parabolic springs, shocks, bumpstops and super singles on our truck made a huge difference in the ride. We had the stock seats rebuilt by a really good local to us upholstery shop...
I previously had a roof rack on the cab and it was noisy and added drag for really no real benifit as I only had some maxtrax in it. This is quieter (I can't hear anything over the engine noise) and with the clear plastic faring the Fuso aerodynamics have transformed from a somewhat hairy brick...
I took a similar but different approach on my cab mount. I used Yakima rack to mount the panel without drilling holes on the roof so the pivot is simply the Yakima bar mounts. The struts were from a panel tilting kit that I purchased from Renogy Solar on sale so it was pretty inexpensive. I...
You might be surprised at how much more you can get out of your existing panels by tipping them toward the sun rather than adding a panel. I did this with the panel on the cab of my Fuso and it was significant. I am l looking at how I can tilt the other two panels that are located on the...
You need to look at this holistically. What else are you doing to the truck? Suspension changes? Lift? (A softer longer travel suspension would be a good thing with a stiffer frame) Heavier camper box? Are you isolating the camper from the truck frame? (you should) I suspect that the...
That's great news on the truck. Babies tend to show up whenever THEY decide its time. I wish you the best!
As I posted this I had a flashback to when our first baby was born (31 years ago). I drove a Ford Ranger 5 speed standard cab with a bench seat. When we strapped the baby seat into the...
One other thought - The other "tool" that I carry is a AAA card. I upgraded to their RV plus coverage and it will cover 100 miles of towing in the US for whatever you are driving. When my tranny crapped we got towed from Tonopah, NV into Las Vegas to get it replaced. 117 miles. I paid for 17...
I carry a Torque Multiplier to break the lug nuts loose. Some swear a cheater bar can do it but I bent a cheater bar trying so I carry at torque multiplier wrench. This is the one I carry and it make easy (well easier) work of changing tires:

Along the lines...
Mog - That's better than I expected but doesn't cover our rated axle load. I have been careful to build my rig to the rated loads so I don't have to have a pissing match with a judge or my insurance company in case something goes wrong. I am running 285/70R19.5 Toyo's on ATW super single steel...
