Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

I also went ahead and ordered a set of roof bars, I didn’t want a full rack but need the ability to carry small amounts of lumber without my trailer, kayaks, bikes, etc. The only options I found were the factory style ones and the Rhino ones for $450. Front Runner has some pictured on their...

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

Update on the all terrains, one of my biggest fears with swapping tires was ruining how well this thing drives, and I hadn’t been all that happy with the the change. I was expecting some road noise, the lower speed parking lot rumbling/vibration, a bit harsher ride over small bumps, and a little...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Agreed. It’s just a matter of “X” being installed before “Y” and only the companies that race actually care about ease of maintenance. Changing a water pump or alternator won’t be any more difficult with that hood design, and it’s going to be a long while hopefully before owners are tackling...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Not sure you’re going to get that manual transmission, I don’t remember from the blurry photo on the spec sheet someone posted. Other than the driving experience however, the Land Rover ZF autos are REALLY good. Besides the Allison in my Chevy 2500HD, they are the only ones that seem to keep you...

    “Portable” auxiliary battery system

Thanks, I’ve been doing some reading on running the winch directly off a battery and it seems to work fine for short pulls. Again, this would be very light duty stuff, where tugging the vehicle 5’-10’ back will free it, and you can drive out the way you came. I’ll probably run one of the...

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

Thanks, I’ll let you know if I decide to go that route, I’m just worried about the transmission at this point.

    “Portable” auxiliary battery system

Thanks, yeah I agree the winch would draw it down quickly. I’m thinking I would get one solid rear pull out of it on the LR3 or my wife’s RR in an “emergency” type situation. For general off-road use it would be front mounted and powered by the main battery with the engine running. For using it...

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

Is anyone aware if there was a factory transmission skid plate/guard, even as an option? There are very clearly tabs behind the engine guard and on the crossmember which would allow it to be mounted, but there are no signs of one being there. I haven’t been able to find much online either...

It makes sense that coils would be an option, I had paid zero attention to the Discovery 5 based on it’s looks, but apparently coils are standard. The Defender spec sheets showed 18” wheels being available too, those with a 32” tire standard and being able to fit a 33” wouldn’t be bad at all.

    “Portable” auxiliary battery system

Hi all, I recently purchased a Land Rover LR3 and have been getting it setup as a DD/camping vehicle. For a couple reasons, I’ve been looking at adding an auxiliary battery setup, but believe a portable setup would be more versatile for my needs. #1 is a winch. I plan to build a 2” front...

Help me Pick Lift and Tires

The problem with these trucks is that more lift really doesn’t allow you to run larger tires. I just put 265/65R18 KO2’s on mine and the spots where it’s close to rubbing in access mode are the same as where it almost rubs in off-road mode. It’s the outer edge of the tire against the frame horns...

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

Had a fantastic trip today. Weather was perfect and neither vehicle had any problems or got stuck. Unfortunately we were unable to make our destination goal, we ran into a water crossing that was mid thigh deep at the point where the green line turns to red on the map and decided not to risk it...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

I agree that most people don’t use the capabilities, but I’d argue that the idea of them is significant enough to infuence sales. No one takes a Rolex Submariner to 300 atm, but if they reduced it to 10’ to accommodate swimming pools, they would lose customers. Understandably, they will...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Reverse for one. The second issue with these auto gearboxes having 10+ speeds is they have more smaller moving parts in the same amount of space and are not as durable. There have been a ton of problems with the 2015+ Silverado transmissions. I’m also not a fan of transmissions that shift 5...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Parts and service from a strictly “$ right now” standpoint. I’d wager that most Rovers that have been properly maintained by dealers have made them way more $ over a 5 year period than they did on the initial sale. Brand loyalty is another one. A lot of people grow up liking things their...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Higher sales of a new model are to be expected after its release, it’s just the way things work. As much as I’d like to see Land Rover take the low sales of the D5 as some feedback of the direction they have been heading and correct it, I don’t want the brand to fail. I’ve voiced my opinion in...

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

Time for a small update, I went out to the national forest last Friday and played with the vehicle a bit. Sand mode works really well, as do the tires. This thing rides like a dream, and I’m happy with how it climbed the smaller obstacles I tried. I used the GAP tool to lower it onto the...

    L322 Overlanding Build and Adventures

From a tire selection standpoint, there’s nothing to be gained with 19’s over 20’s. It would be interesting if 18’s can be made to fit the RRSC. It would be nice to keep the Brembo calipers with the HSE rotors using some smaller brackets. If a guy could get the CAD file done, it shouldn’t be...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Anybody else getting tired of this multi year release and small snippets of continued teasing? It’s a bit like the girl that flirts with everyone but won’t ever do anything else, and they all lose interest. I can’t help but think it won’t live up to all the hype, when it rolls out with a 2.0...

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

Pics of the tires, no rubbing anywhere even in access height. I didn’t trim anything, I just moved the driver’s side front wheel well wire. Need to lower it to the bumpstops with the IID tool and make sure it’s still driveable. ARB compressor is almost done, I just need to figure out the switch...
