1 yes so long as it's within your license class
2) could work.
Not sure where you live but look up the RAC Radio Amateurs of Canada and they can help you get a license and find a local club or Elmer to help you succeed.

Was your iPad mini2 the Cellular version or the Wifi version Fireman78?
Thanks for the replies all. Just was wondering about having enough space for maps. I have read use the cell connection for on road and once you get remote swap to cached maps as a way to manage map caching.
The 4Runner does not have the space you show under the center part of the dash, only over in the passenger area. Also, I prefer to have easy eye and hand access to gear. So no bending down or just interpreting something on a quick glance out of the corner of my eye. Why do you need an SWR meter...
I am also glad to see GMRS getting more legs. I do prefer Ham Radio and have been licensed as a ham for a long time. I think GMRS is a good all around service. There are some areas with repeaters and some REACT units monitor for emergencies on some channels. The kicker is when in the middle of...
The local cell company has an offer on a 32 GB iPad mini 2. Is that suitable as a Nav device? Is it too small to run mapping programs effectively?

I am looking at putting a floor mount in my 3rd Gen 4runner. The concept would be using a gas pipe flange bolted to the passenger side of the transmission hump or onto the floor and come up using a gas pipe. Mounted on the vertical pipe would be remote heads for a TS480 and an ID5100. Building...
Get a Larsen NMO it will work great and take a beating on the roof. The whips are indestructible and the coil is low profile enough unless you wanna go thru a rock or tree.

Why not drill a hole? Best mount is an NMO properly installed. Second best would be an NMO mount that clamps on the hood or tailgate. Run the wire to the rig and enjoy!
See K0BG.com for info, pictures and ideas.

1) really bad idea. Good way to start a fire. Always, ALWAYS direct to the battery with a fuse in line on both leads near the battery.
2/3) buy a second radio. Keep the Chinese thing til it breaks but buy a real radio, yaesu, Kenwood, icom as a mobile. I suggest dual band like a 710g, ftm400 or...
Don't forget 2/70cm can do satellite but it raises a layer of effort many don't try.
If budget is at issue buy used not Baofeng. Those Chinese rigs are unreliable and dirty. Not unusual for tests to show out of band spurs and random failure due to poor QA.
You can get lots of use Ham and...
Where are you going?
If you are sticking to populated areas and pretty civilized parks in the lower 48 or lower Canada near the US border: 2/70 Ham and CB are fine. Even GMRS/FRS can do well.
Going into mountains/ rugged rural areas: satellite, Ham HF, maybe CB if in the US.
Internationally...
I'd be curious if anyone is using the new Surface. I'm all for Mac but lots of good software only runs Windows sadly. Interesting thread!

Get your General or Exttra ham license. Then put in a rig that does HF and V/UHF. You can use repeaters when you want but in the back country you have access to nets on 20m and 40m that cover regions, continents and beyond.
I love 40m HF out east because there are some quite active nets during...
I'm of the always dualband school. If you are in a group and someone is beaconing APRS on 2 the group can shift to 440. On the 440 side you can listen, but not transmit, to FRS/GMRS and do crossband with someone listening on an HT who cannot transmit for example.

None of the above. Given your situation go get used Motorola gear. If, and I don't wish this, you dump it the used Motorola still works. No they aren't dual band but they are rugged. Older XTS rigs come in under $400.
The cheapie Chinese rigs, with one exception I know of, all have issue with...
Best bet is ask the group you ride with what they use. I'd get a dual band radio no matter what but if you ask you'd know who to talk to and where.

So on the topic of these antennas. Do those who mount to the rear quarter panel regret that choice while on a trail?
