Searching autotrader, I found a lot of new Chevy Express 2500 and Nissan NV vans for about 30K. They are both body on frame like the E series and can both be converted to 4wd. If I was going to spend the time and money on the conversion, I would start with a new van. It will be easier to work on...
I didn't measure the tongue weight, maybe 450lbs of people pets and suitcases in the truck. I was probably a little over gvwr but you can see from the picture that it didn't compress the rear suspension too bad. I agree the short wheelbase and low HP handicap the 4runner's towing capabilities...
I just moved about 1k miles towing a 12 foot uhaul loaded at max capacity (about 5k, maybe a little over) using a 5th gen 4runner and thought I would post the performance since I couldn't find anything before my trip.
-Acceleration was decent but you could definitely feel the weight. Especially...
If you watch YouTube videos of TFL Truck testing on Ike Gauntlet, the gas vs diesel performance towing up hill is night and day difference. I'm buying the 7.3 because it will satisfy my requirements, (slide in camper and occasional towing), but I would have sprung for diesel if I planned on...
Most people who buy the F450 pickup truck use it for towing. I think the diesel is far superior to the 7.3 gas towing heavy loads. Chassis cabs are usually fitted with heavy tool boxes or other industrial equipment so heavy loads without towing are more likely.
It's definitely tuned differently. It has lower peak HP, not sure about torque. I don't see much need to change it if you are hauling a camper.
8 mpg is about what I saw in a YouTube video on a dump truck with the 7.3. I think it was an F600.
Another consideration is the chassis cab 7.3 is derated for longevity compared to the super duty pickup trucks.
I considered something similar but couldn't find any reliable data on expected fuel economy. I decided there is probably a reason the F450 pickup isn't offered in the 7.3...
Most of your counter points are value judgments and my intention was not to imply there is something wrong with how you decide to equip your vehicle.
The paragraph I quoted is a misinterpretation of what I posted. I absolutely think trailer brakes are practical. My point was that trailer brakes...
I can somewhat understand the benefit even if it's a rare occurrence and carrying a spare isn't that big of a deal to me, but I'm guessing 90% of the people who match wheels do it for looks. Again, I understand as I want to drive a cool looking rig as much as the next guy.
I would definitely...
I haven't watched trophy truck racing recently but I remember in "Dust to Glory", trophy trucks would lean and squat around corners in the street sections. Definitely designed for a very specific task at the expense of street handling.
I have seen sandbags filled with a cement and sand mix so when they get wet and dry, they harden and the burlap sack basically dissolves over time. That might be what you saw.
For me, the opposite is true. I know how easy it is to go down from heat exhaustion or drown or slip and break something and it's in the forefront of my mind whenever I'm away from "civilization". With training comes risk mitigation.
I once attended a motorcycle track day with Jason Pridmore...
I was using Iridium. Like I posted, it was probably user error. The instructions had confusing codes that didn't work for me. I'm sure they are a great product if you figure it out at home before you need it.
I can't speak to that specific model but strobe lights work great as night signal devices.
For reference, military pilots typically carry locator beacons, (GPS based similar to SPOT or InReach), radios with emergency preset frequencies, strobe lights, signal mirrors, flares, smoke, sea dye and...
One caution on SAT phones, I have been in remote locations and couldn't get a connection. It was probably user error because I don't use them often but if they are your emergency plan, figure it out at home before you need it. Same for radios. I know of a guy who was treading water for 3 hours...
I have responded to search and rescue and finding someone without a signal device is a lot more difficult than you might think. The most effective device is obviously a satellite based locator beacon with a subscription service. Radios and signal mirrors are also effective if you know how to use...
Big time gap on this thread.
I spent the last few years pondering what type of RV or camper I wanted, (lived in Hawaii at the time). The only pass through that I considered was a 4wd super C but I finally settled on a slide in.
I really like the idea of a separate truck and camper. Besides the...
