I don't think it's over by any means. People are still buying them. iKamper just opened up a retail showroom per the article above so the demand is definitely still there.

I found the cheap amazon version at an amazon return/resell store and bought it for $4.50. Haven't used it yet as I literally just got it. Never felt the need for one but, hey, it was $4.50.

You'll end up working more... at least that happened to me. I "lived" in the back of my truck with a shell on it for about 6 months. Did 2 nights in the truck then drove home for a night and re did the process. Still had my apt but my job was 3 hour commute round trip. It got old. Lonely...
I finally fixed my squeaky leaf spring issues and didn’t have to buy new leafs. I enjoy driving my truck again.
I bought new OEM leaf spring isolator pads for $15 on eBay. Took me 20 minutes to replace all of them and it’s back to normal.

Why not just buy a box truck and throw the box on the flatbed? I guess that would be the cheapest.
But I'd also suggest what Fergie said...from what I least heard your build time will be pretty excessive.
