Try switching to shelf stable milk. It only requires refrigeration after it is open. That way you only have a quart at a time "at risk."

Why wouldn't you just return it to Costco? They have a "no questions asked" return policy.
I have never had any issues returning an item for any reason whatsoever to Costco. In fact I would say they approach as close to possible a "perfect" return policy.

I would suggest an un-charred barrel. Keep it wet all the time though, you don't want it to dry out.
