    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Been busy with the holidays, and fabricating bits and pieces for this bus. Nothing major to show yet, but here's what we have for now: I finished up the truss on my front axle... the gussets for the inner C's were refined a bit, and a stainless strip was added a month ago, to the bottom to...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

No-Ox-Id is the paste I use and would recommend to anyone. It's cheap, effective, and a little bottle goes a long way. I've used it on all sorts of connectors including on 280Ah cell terminals/bus bars and it performs wonderfully.

    International 3800 adventure bus build

Just wondering, but have you considered skinning over the body now that the windows are out, and adding new RV windows instead of the old school bus ones? I can say from plenty of experience with bus windows - both my own and helping friends with their bus builds, plus the skoolie community...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Thanks for this. The Pistas are interesting, just can't find them up here very often. XL's are out. I just checked and the 12.50R20 variety actually have 170lbs less capacity per tire than my current H1's. Yet again the H1's seem to be the best well-rounded bet, all things considered. Worst...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Yeah, the larger wheels do look better, have more capacity, 43" XZL's should be fine for the D60 axle with the uprades, and they prevent me from having to regear the front axle - which is a nice bonus. Colony Tire has great stuff though I'm at the behest of whatever I can exchange with...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Those stem guards look tacked on. Wonder if you could just grind 'em off? Could be an interesting option...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Thanks for the nice words about the project, guys. I appreciate it. (y) I haven't had much of a chance to work on the bus. Work keeps me busy. However, i did have a chance to weld up a battery fixture for the LiFePO4 cells. This will maintain some light compression on them which increases...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

It essentially is a Super 60 now, I'd say... :P Smaller, low pinion ring gear, yes... but a load bolt to prevent deflection. I could upgrade to 70 ring and pinion, but I need to put funds elsewhere in the build and it's more than strong enough for my needs, anyways. The inner C's have been...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

We talking 75-80 kilometers or miles per hour? ;) If miles, absolutely not! If kilometers, yeah, I'll take it on backroads around 80km/h or 50 mph. Class 8 trucks are speed limited to 105km/h up here, so I have little reason to go faster than them on the freeway... The 335/80R20's look great...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

These tires have a 4,540lb load capacity, so they're more than sufficient as the "weakest point" I think. Curb weight is approximate, but it should be between 9500lbs and 9700lbs as a shell with the engine, trans, t-case,axles; everything but the interior conversion/solar. This is based on a...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Thank you, I'm excited! Thanks! I have a Dana 80 that I was planning on using. The problem with this is it's about 69" wide from wheel surface to wheel surface. Not wide enough for Humvee tires as is. I'll have to either use spacers (e.g. Stahl Steel) or recenter my humvee wheels. I'm...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Yessir. Eaton FS6406A 6 speed with a DT360 on one end and a T-136-27 Rockwell transfer case on the other. 1550 shaft to the rear, 1410 to the front. 63:1 crawl ratio with 3.54 gears. Got the transmission for next to nothing because the previous owner thought he damaged it in a rebuild. Turns...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

I finally got a chance to re-tackle the Dana 60 front: The inner C's were gusseted on the top and bottom. I researched common failure modes in Oka front axles, since those trucks have a max GVWR in line with my bus. Of those that failed, many had bent tubes and/or bent inner C's. This should...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Opted for a Sweet Mfg. servo to give the bus some power steering, but with a hydraulic cylinder between the axle/tierod: I eventually painted and rebuilt the Dana 60, and got that under the bus: Mocking up draglink length. Since the shackles are at the front, the steering box is behind...

    1959 GMC Adventure Bus Build

Being dismayed by rent prices, liking a bit of adventure, and a good project, I decided to buy a bus in the summer of 2020. I'm a guy in my late 20's, finishing up school, on the way to working as an elementary teacher and planning on living up in northern Ontario's more remote communities in...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Thanks dude! Yeah, 14,000lbs seems a good target to aim for. Curb weight of my bus is about 9,500lbs. Most long wheelbase sprinter conversions and shorty buses r are around 2,000-3,000lbs for the interior conversion. My bus, and I'd assume a MT45, are not that much longer than the longest...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

Did some MOI calculations comparing my trussed axle with the ones you mentioned @DzlToy: lyy doesn't increase by a significant amount (though granted, this ignores the section where the truss transitions from an I beam to a box as it nears the diff housing) but lxx has a massive increase -...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

Thank you very much for all this information. the moment of inertia data really helps put this in perspective. I'm interesting to calculate how my trussed axle compares in MOI to the others. One question... In the bold part, are you referring to a classic, kingpin D60 like mine, or to the Super...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

Sorry for the late reply... Didn't see it there! Frame width is standard 34" with as with nearly all medium duty and larger trucks. I've since trussed and gusseted the Dana 60, and added 35 spline outers + Warn premium hubs. Best option - for a variety of reasons - was to work with what I...
