    International 3800 adventure bus build

Pick out some potential transfer case candidates, and definitely measure to make sure the driveshaft will fit past your transmission. Do not forget to measure the offset between the input and output along the length of the vehicle - as you can see below it made things in my setup, quite close...

    International 3800 adventure bus build

One of FABCO's "big" innovations was the offset pumpkin (well, not their innovation I suppose, but they made great strides in popularizing it with MDT's). It's what allowed them to make trucks like the International Unistar 4WD without raising ride height that much - very important for a cabover...

    International 3800 adventure bus build

I am familiar with FABCO axles as I was considering them for my build and when I was wondering an even larger bus than what I have now... (but I don't need that massive of a GAWR, nor those ratios, so I went with a Jana 76 front axle). In any case; like someone else said, the older axles used...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

I gave the guys at Reid a call, who recommended the engineering folks at ECGS - hoping to hear back with some opinions from them. In the meantime, it looks like I could make a Super 60 work. I would stick with the OEM radius arms and possibly run airbags up front instead of springs. I already...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

Will give Irate a shot, thanks guys. Yeah, agreed on the very old stuff. At present I think I'll stick with the Kingpin Dana 60 and go no older, unless I could find an open knuckle Dana 70. The problem with the Super Dana 60 is that I am set up for push-pull steering which I don't believe I...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

What's your curb weight, and, by HD knuckles do you mean aftermarket ones akin to Reid/Crane/Solid? I've been looking at Solid's offering. I have 35 spline inners already. I figure upgrading the knuckles and trussing/gusseting first, would be the best option to start with if I stick with the 60...

    Larger than a Dana 60?

Long story short, I'm building a 2 ton GMC bus into an expedition/4WD vanlife/whatever you want to call it, rig. I'm looking for a suitable front end. Got a Chevy Kingpin D60 under there currently, but am thinking I need something bigger. I had thought that the Dana 60 axles were nominally rated...

    '97 NPR build

Amazing build! I saw a few of your posts on DIYsolarforum and have been hunting around for more about the rig itself - glad to see it here! I have a similar build going on right now in terms of GVWR/tire size/drivetrain/intended use. It's great to see that I'm not the only one planning on a...

    International 3800 adventure bus build

Great move swapping out that awful AT545 for something nicer. Being able to split gears is a lot of fun and real handy in something as big as a bus.

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Welp, for a number of reasons the BFG Baja Humvee tires seem to be the way to go. Cheap enough that if I hated them it wouldn't be a major loss, but new enough that if I like 'em, they'll last a while. I think they look great: I mean hey... it's not like I could go much bigger anyways lol -...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Thanks for the replies! Oh yeah, not going with split ring rims - I had to remove the worst offenders off this bus; Firestone RH5 "widowmakers". That was a thrill I don't want again! I'm assuming in spite of being 2 part, the Humvee rims (or military 20's) are safe as they're bolt together and...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Hmmm, this is promising! Some of the other wheels I had looked at were too heavy. The ones you're linking the same as these, I think: https://militarytires.ca/product/20x10-titan-5-ton-wheel/ The 11R20 Michelin XL's I'd consider putting on them would bring the weight per wheel/tire assembly to...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Well, if you don't think DRW with rocks is an issue with this light of a weight, that's probably alright then as the 22.5 10-lug wheels are the next-best option. Overall diameter, capacity availability, and cost (surprisingly) are strong points here. 20" military wheels and tires are just too...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Fortunately, I live close to the militarytires.ca guys, so, getting newer humvee tires (between 1 to 6 years old) is not much of an issue. I do worry about long-term availability though. My understanding is the US nat'l guards will always use humvees, and the humvee will always have an ambulance...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

19.5's would be awesome, but I'm yet to find any AT/MT options in a larger size than the Humvee Baja (37") or 325/85R16 XML's (38.5"). Largest I could find was 305/70R19.5 Michelin XDE2+. If you can think of anything larger, do let me know. 20" would be great, but the MRAP wheels are expensive...

Tire Suggestions for 4x4 School Bus

Hello everyone, Haven't posted much about the project on these forums, but nevertheless, I'm converting a 23 ft., 1959, GMC/Wayne school bus to 4x4. Dana 60 front, probably an 11.5AAM or Dana 80 rear end... This bus is a lot of fun, but one thing I'm struggling with right now, is tire choices...

    International 3800 adventure bus build

Damn, and I thought the 13.1:1 with my bus's SM465+NP205 was low - 18.81:1 will be fantastic for a rig of this size! The skylight looks great! You'll definitely want to paint your roof a light colour. I'd recommend having a look at this thread...

    International 3800 adventure bus build

Aaah, that's well thought out. Looking back at some of your older pics, I see those fish plates. Indeed, as many mechanical systems as possible is the way to go! Right now I'm looking at a GMC B-series with a CAT 3126 or 3116 - which I've heard mixed things about, but they're less computerized...

    International 3800 adventure bus build

Fully mechanical DT466, or a 466E? Wonderful engines either way! Did you have any concerns with welding the frame rails, or is that not really an issue considering it's past the axles?
