Thanks Guys!
Lid and Rack are "Done" for now.
In an effort to avoid metal rubbing metal I used rubber isolation bushings between the basket and roof rack as well as the tent.
To attach the fire wood rack I installed blind nuts to the bottom of the tube prior to powder...
Picked up the lid from the body shop where it was painted with bright white base coat and clear coat to match Brandy's JK. Please ignore the Krylon white paint on the trailer. It is only temporary until I get through cutting and welding on it. It looks so bad next to the lid.
Installed...
I kept mine even though they are pretty dry rotten. I've seen some military surplus stores that deal in the lltis that have them for sale.
No Mark, I was trying to design the rack so that it would look like a roof rack so the metal is only on the floor.
Greg,
I suspect mine saw plenty of use as well. It had a lot of corrosion when I got it. Looking back at 2007 when you could get a "new" one for $500-700 makes me sick :)
I bet your lid is considerably lighter than mine and you would need a lot lighter gas spring. There is a chart...
I set the tent on and mocked up the fuel cans. I wanted to keep everything in tight on the trailer. Several of the trips we make during the year are in heavily wooded areas and I didn't want anything hanging off the sides of the trailer that could be ripped off.
Then I started weighing and...
In an effort to duplicate the look of a Safety Devices rack I made some tube clamps identical to those used in their cages.
First I stamped out some flat bar stock and traced the template to it.
I then drilled the holes and used a jig I made in my tube notcher to cope the plates.
I...
I had a local sheet metal shop brake up the lid.
Then I welded in the ends. I chose not to grind down the weld rather leave them exposed to match the utilitarian look of the trailer. None of the welds on the corners of the trailer are ground down so a spit polished lid would look out of...
Brandy earning her keep.
I picked up some new 10" hubs with 5 on 5" pattern to match the JK so I could run the same tires and wheels. New wheel bearings and shocks go on too.
Completed Suspension.
Back Over.
New fenders will make the short list.
Brandy is becoming really proficient at running the blast cabinet.
Axel stripped and ready for POR 15.
Pressing the bushings into the spring hangers.
New spring hardware.
Axle and springs being assembled.
Correcting the incorrect backing plate.
Springs were disassembled sandblasted and then coated with POR 15 and Chassis Coat.
New "correct" bushings were sourced from Zenith Spring Co. and pressed in.
Brakes have seen little use.
Incorrect backing plate will have to be "fixed".
Lots of PB Blaster.
No amount of PB Blaster was getting this one off.
Removing the spring bushings.
Bent landing gear will have to be repaired.
While I'm stuck inside I will try to bring you up to date. I promise there will be lots of pics.
First order of business was to flip Pepe over to refurbish the suspension.
For some reason a previous owner had switched out one of the backing plates. It has a hole for a wheel...
It's Thanksgiving. The plan was to headed to Arkansas for 4 days of camping after dinner but I'm stuck at home sick. The head cold I've had since Sunday replaced the rich flavors of Thanksgiving dinner with a bland array of tastes ranging from sawdust stuffing to tofu turkey. I could have...
