I like to setup camp and still take my vehicle out exploring, I may stay in the same place for a few days. I have two boys (older at than yours at this point) and we have been camping, exploring, overlanding or whatever you want to call for man many decades. Even as a kid we did road trips. I...
I was only thinking about a shell with a pick up. There campers that pop up allowing a low profile when you travel but when stopped open into more room. I would think they could be out of OP budget but this changes my opinion on SUV vs pickup. I would not want a roof top tent though...
I know a few with 90s and 2000s Chevy pickups, suburabns and Tahoe's They are fine, they come in 4 wheel drive but if you truly want a vehicle designed for off road there are many many many many better choices, infact not sure if I could think of a worse choice. I am not saying there is...
I had a 2004 4Runner (V6 4.0) that had head issues at about 170K. Seems somewhat common on the 04s and some 05s. Not trying to steer you away from Toyota just those years.
For overlanding I would prefer an SUV vs a pick up. Easier to secure your stuff, better protected from the element. To...
It is a toy, I would rather have a side by side. Actually I would rather have my 4 Wheelers. I have seen a few around, they aren't fast, they don't come highway legal.
I don't seem them that great to build for off road, they don't seem all that agile and not sure what work you could get...
That is a concern I have. I've always had more hardcore aggressive mud terrains that did have thicker / stronger sidewalls.
Falken does advertise they have something to make the sidewall tougher. I have not had an issue yet with mine.
I was / am worried about this especially being a bigger tent. It the poles get bent on an insta tent they will be trashed. Mine has been in some decent winds but with tarp up. So far so good.
I replied to this post a while back and have recently bought an insta-tent. I have a core 9 person, it was about $200 dollars. It setups up and takes down easy. In the pic below it was raining pretty hard so I have a tarp over it.
another picture. I have timed myself and I can set it up by...
Our new ones and some used ones we bought were delivered on roll off trucks designed to transport the containers. The ones we acquired were from around were I work and often brought in with our fort lift.
We use some that are flat on level ground with a thick gravel base and they are fine...
We bought a bunch of steel containers at work. You have to keep them very level if you want to be able to use the doors on them. They flex very easy. Like mentioned earlier they are like trampalene if you try walking on them. They are designed for stacking. I would NEVER EVER consider getting...
My core tent came from Walmart, it was not $40 dollars and it has held up in storms. It was right between a little closer to the top end or your $100-$300 suggestion. Go to Walmart.com and you will be surprised what you can find. Here is a link on Walmart.com for a 420 HP Chevy small block...
I would prefer an SUV over a truck for overlanding. You can secure you gear better and keep it better protected from the element.
Get a vehicle suited to easily tow what you want than worry about setting it up for overlanding.
Think of overlanding as camping when you go off-roading. For the...
A while back I got a battery operated say for about $70 on sale from Walmart. It has a 10 inch bar and will cut 2" to 4" limbs / small trees. Light weight and will fit easily across the rack on my 4 wheeler. It is great for clearing trails around my property and small fire wood. Cheap, light...
I linked up with a small group (maybe a dozen or so) a few years back (on Facebook), now there are almost 900 members. I was talking with the person who started it yesterday and he was commenting on how he has seen many of the places we travel start to erode more quickly. We travel all legal...
This is how it is in our Forestry areas but we aren't that busy. All I can say is be careful. People get on 4wheelers and side by sides and loose their minds.
We get a sticker from the state that says we are good on forestry and one from the county that says we are good on all other dirt...
Nope,
Insurance varies between cars, gas mileage, and repairs.
One transfer case, some electric work, a car that gets worse gas mileage and more expensive to insure will eat up allot of intial saving costs.
If you are in a car for a short time, the initial cost saving will play a big role...
Read the entire article, it states cost of ownership is LESS now then in the past.
You make some good points. Leasing is a trap. If you want a new car every few years you are "trapped" weather you lease or buy. If you lease when it comes to taxes and finance charge you only pay that on the...
