I have tried this also. Works great! The really key to this one is the amount of vasoline. Too much and it won't take a spark that quickly. I did some experimenting at home with this to see what the best ratio of vasoline to cotton ball was. Tough to explain, but for me it seemed to work...
I would say it depends on your situation. I have two survival kits, one small and one large. The small one fits in a zip-lock bag has a single plastic rain poncho that is pretty good size when you open it up. It can be used as it was intended or as a roof on a shelter that you build. My large...
With respect to the weaker drivetrain in the 2nd gens: I don't think the parts are weaker, you just have more power and torque to break stuff. Combine that with the fact that the trucks are also heavier, if you are the smash on the skinny-pedal-to-get-over-the-obstacle kind of wheeler, then you...
Sounds good...
What I really like about the books, is they gave me ideas that I hadn't thought about before. I may not implement these ideas or methods exactly as they are described, but I might be able to use them in different ways, or to supplement a method I already know. After you read one...
The char-cloth does work very well. As said previously, there are easier ways to start a fire. I keep some dryer lint in a zip lock bag (to keep it dry) in my survival kit. That stuff takes even the smallest spark and goes up in flames. Give it a try.
No problem... I do highly recommend you take a class. The books are great but doing it is something completely different. Also practice what you read in the books. I do everytime I go camping. I have gotten good enough with a few fire starting methods that I don't even start our camp fire with...
I can't say anything about courses in your area but check out the Equipped website. They have tons of great reviews on just about everything survival including books: http://www.equipped.org/books.htm
I have read the following and really liked them:
Desert Survival Skills
David Alloway, 2000...
I would get a 2nd gen if you can. I am not a big fan of the torsion bar setup for the front suspension on the 1st gen. I have had a 1st gen Frontier and now have a 2nd gen Frontier, so I am very familiar with the comparison. The extra power the 2nd gens have is also really nice. I find the 2nd...
Oh man! That is awesome! I have been waiting a very long time to see what this was going to look like on your truck Ed. I love it! The mounting looks pretty good, I am going to have to get under my truck to get a better look. Thank you very much for your efforts and time. You are doing a huge...
Looks really good man! I can't wait to see what you come up with for the front bumper. I have been tossing around the same idea and have a couple of designs, but I want to wait and see what ARB comes up with first. Post some pics when you have it done (or even while you are building it!).
Welcome to ExPo! Great place here with tons of good info. Lots of motivation here to get out and do what you do. Cool to see another Nissan, now post some pics of your truck when you get a chance. :sombrero:
