Hi fella. So, the hatch in the Merc's doesn't fully open. It'd involve unbolting it to get out... It's purely a vent aid. Add to that, with the access to the body cut, I now have 3 decent openings should I accidentally plant the truck on it's side... Re the roof boxes, the sides of the roof...

Nah, I bought them off Ebay years ago, new out of the US. Came from LA somewhere.

Luckily none. I work at a place that has good humor and see's entertainment in most things. They're not common these days. Guess thats one of the main reasons I'm still working there. :)

We've had some highly amusing moments with them. When I first got them, we set them up in the workshop at work pointing towards the offices... There's a (now disused) railway just behind the workshop. I gave the horns a long blast as two mechanics sprinted through the offices banging the walls...

I took a trip to Bunnings (Ozzie hardware center) on Sat morning with a few mates to look at some light but tough cargo boxes. I'd already sized up what would work, and came home with these two. Trial fit time!

Next up was to cut, shape and fit the side sheets that will help tie the roof rack into the body. These took a good few hours to get right. The fold (in theory) matches the fold in the body roof... Time will tell if I've got it right!

Time for an update. Work has been very busy, as there's a government incentive to buy machinery etc so we've been very busy. However, this was a long weekend here, so I did manage a few hours on the truck. First up was the light supports. Originally I was going to use 50 x 25 RHS with 2.5mm wall...

That's a nicely made rack. I like the sheet they've used for the floor too!

With the antics of getting the rack off the tuck out of the way, I've been able to get on and shape the front section on the bench. There's still the fine bits to do, but this gives you the rough idea. Next up is to make a light support for these...

I know a little... The OM366LA is a 5.95lt straight 6 turbo diesel. They are a solid reliable engine, and were a replacement for the 5.6lt OM352 in the 1617's. Both are reasonably good on fuel, but both are under powered in any truck over 8 or 9 tonnes... The 1120 that was here is an 80kmh...

Small differences.. 12 tonne rating instead of 11 tonnes, but in theory only 220 hp instead of 240hp... Our 1222 (12 tonne, 220hp) has the later V6 and hub reduction rear axle. It's also the longer 4.2m wheelbase which suits our 6m box. Realistically I'd think the differences are very little...

Hi Joe. In a word yes. The sides of the rack and ladder area will have 2mm alli sheet in them (removable on the ladder side but bolted on the top sides and drivers side). The front center panel will have a fine mesh over the front to 'hide' the fact that there's a train horn up there and...

Slight change of design to the front of the roof rack/basket/... I wanted a place for a couple more marker lights, and to change the front look from just a rectangular roof basket. Here is the rough sketch... And the start of the fabrication process.

Happy that the cab tipping gear works fine with the added weight it was time to somehow get the basket off the roof as it'll be easier to finish the front pipework with it all at bench height not 3.2m up above a glass screen! Time to deploy the tractor and home made jib! After the antics of...
