Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

So, looking at the leaks, I wouldn't be too worried... Yes they'll need fixing, but it's all part of the build. This however is just my perspective as I seem to like making work for myself!! The heads are separate units so removing one head is not as bad as it sounds... Is your truck an 1834 (V6...

    Lowly the Lorry. . .

Oh how I know the feeling of having to build the shed to build the truck!!! How good does it feel putting your truck in your shed for the first time though!! So, hot tip number 1... Make sure the shed and other jobs are 100% finished before you start on Lowly, because if you are anything like...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Shade. It's all fairly close but should work well. I have around 300mm free space above the cylinders to undo the valves. I also plan to make the flex hoses long enough so they can be fitted prior to putting the cylinders into the lockers. Watch this space! As for costs, yeah, time soon...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Once all the side skirts etc are done, I have another decision to make... I have my spare donor Mercedes 1734 prime mover... This has the same V6 engine but is a (knackered... thrown a leg) 340hp version of my current 220hp non turbo unit. The cab has very good wheel arches, but they are...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Once the mods and alterations were done, it was time to refit the tray into its original factory supplied location (before the crane was fitted) and start reconnecting the hoses. Some are too long and some are too short! Happy days!! With the battery box in place, I could start to get my head...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Side swap time, and onto a job I've been putting off! Relocating the battery box and air tanks! Once I had all the hoses labelled and disconnected, it was time to deploy the trusty helper and lift the tanks out. Once out, I had a half day repairing one of the tank straps (that has been caught on...

150kg... I recon had I built mine out of Alli I'd have saved about 1500kg! My fault tho as I over engineer everything even tho I don't need to!! Watch this space re my truck weight!! :o

Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

If the oil is running out that fast, from the top of the engine, I'd be thinking it's rocker cover gaskets or an oil return line as opposed to heads leaking... The garage should be able to find that easily so ask them to rectify it.. PTO fault will be an earth issue... They either work or they...

    Pulled the trigger

Looks brilliant, but I guess quite time consuming. Being a glued composite, it'll be hugely strong. I guess I've gone with the metal frame, alli skin and insulation batts as It's stuff I can just potter on with on my own. Doing what you are doing there'd be a fair bot of forward planning and...

Unimog or 911 for Family of 5

If you build your body right with provision for chassis flex and with a decent rear departure angle/clearance, and fit decent tyres, The 1113 will go most places you want. Unlike the Land Rover, once you have a decent body on the rear of a truck you'll rethink where you actually 'want' to go and...

Unimog or 911 for Family of 5

Hello and welcome. As those before me have said, out of your three chosen vehicles I too would go with the Mercedes 1113. The 'bull nose' Merc's have a real appeal about them. My wife would have loved one! That said, as Joe917 rightly said, you do loose a lot of space with the bonnet/nose on...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

After half a day making the rear and center supports in such a way that they'll allow for some twist (as the chassis twists the side skirts have to move too... More on this later!), here's the RH side pretty well complete.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Slow but worthwhile progress here. I wanted to get the RHS side skirts completed before looking at the left side and battery tray shifting. The RH skirt covers the AC unit and also form the splash guards. It has to have provision for the rubber interlink covers that join the body to the skirt...

Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

I like that your crane detaches! That is handy. If it's 'not there' when you get your 'Motorhome' classified as just that, then you are in a win win situation! ;) When do you collect the truck?
