    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

And bolted loosely in place... It'll all come back off when I service the truck and paint it all.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

A little more progress here. Here's the framework I've devised to carry the boxes. It has to be this narrow, as there's a spring and hanger in front of it, and the bolting plate for the wheel lift at the rear.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

One door hung... More at the weekend. I have a load of gravel coming tonight to finally finish the yard in front of the workshop. I need space to park the two incoming visiting overland trucks Babo and Pepita.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Here's a pic of the rear lockers fabricated. I just have to finish hanging the doors, and the mudguard edge, then it'll be a case of positioning them and making the rear supports.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Little to report here. I've been busy stripping the donor truck. The gearbox is long gone and the rest has sat. First to come out was the engine. The OM442 LA is bigger than I thought. The eagle eyed amongst you will be able to see why this truck was a 'donor'... :)

Short Bed Unimog Small Pop Up Camper

Yes. Access only through the cab as when off road the movement between the two pods would be huge. Add to that, its easy to heat and cool a smaller area. The cab pod only has to be tall enough to sit up on a double Queen or King mattress. 1.2m perhaps? Pop tops are great in hot countries... but...

Short Bed Unimog Small Pop Up Camper

I see a cab mounted pod for sleeping. Make it overhang over the bonnet. This would give you a decent bed area and some clothes storage. Move the access hatch to above the rear seating area to do this. I'd then have a separate pod on the rear that is the same height as the top of the sleeping pod...

    U1300L Camper

MickDG, I was at a Caravan and Camping show in Adelaide today. Aldoms the body manufacturer had a stand there. They do now offer composite panels, and have already built several bodies for people. His card is attached.

    U1300L Camper

Think its a luck of the draw... We have some machines that are continually give problems and others that are like your Mog and have not faulted. We have a V6 Amarok that faulted at 2500kms in 2018, then again soon after and then again at 10000kms... I had the problem items in the ECU written out...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Ian. Thank you. Takes a while but it's worth it in the end. Most of it is 1.6mm. The cover skirts (diesel tank and water tank) are only 1.2mm. I thought I'd asked the fella who folded them for me for 1.6 but I had asked for 1.2... Doh!! It's a little light for welding but actually pretty...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Lastly was to add the rest of the locker into the equation and tack it to the end of the water tank carrier giving that rigidity and support. After lunch I hope to weld it all up, sand it down and trial fit it. Having built this locker and spent quite a bit of time head scratching, folding...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Next up was to make the door and door surround. I had to fit all of this before the box was enclosed as I wouldn't have the room to work within the locker...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Neil. Yeah, we are only really carrying it for the AC. If we find we don't utilise it, then we'll free up some space by selling it. :) Talking of space, I had a small space left between the LH rear wheels and the secondary water tank, as mentioned above. There's not quite enough room...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

If we are in a campground with others around, we'd have a powered site.... It's more for that initial pull up on a stinking hot day and turn the AC on to cool the box on sundown, or as the emergency when for some odd reason we have flat batteries. The EU20's and EU22's are very quiet, and tiny...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

The second tank is going inside under the bed. It'll have the chest fridge/freezer in front of it that can be accessed from inside. As several have recommended here having two tanks is good in case of contaminated water. I plan to run two pumps on separate switches. With one being inside we at...
