Pretty Ugly... 1835, The Build Begins

I only opened the side up where the exhaust enters the box as I wanted a different inlet angle. I didn't take any pics as I only went in about 25mm. There was the usual outer sound deadening and a layer of perforated steel. I didn't get into the guts of it...

Pretty Ugly... 1835, The Build Begins

And fitted! Which looks great, and brings a modern look to an older truck.... but took hours, is a one off item, and not 'off the shelf'. If it breaks, I can fix it easily enough, but it's not standard. Seems to be the way with all my builds!! One thing I did consider though... Being a RHD...

Pretty Ugly... 1835, The Build Begins

Not easy... They are bloody heavy too! I bought my muffler about a year before I started the project purely because it had that modern truck look, and I 'thought' it'd look good. When I came to modify it and fit it, it wasn't really suite to the job at all! By the time I'd woked that out, I'd...

Pretty Ugly... 1835, The Build Begins

Brilliant! Loving the 'artist impressions'. Re insulating the container... could you find an old refrigerated container as a base for the living box? The insulation would be done for you. Looking forward to seeing this build evolve! I also now know what truck the muffler I bought and modified...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hello again. No worries. The rear lift is the current task, so I should have something workable over the next few weeks. I'll post more as I get there. Re posting, mine took several years to get going but it did eventually. People still looked in and I kept adding ideas and drawings etc. If a...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Madoxen. Yeah it does. Better stance. Are you wanting more info on the rear wheel lift or the cab lift? Cheers.

Can you run the engine and turn this axle over slowly in crawler gear to see if the gear/shaft has any whip or wobble? (suggesting someone in the cab with their foot hovering over the clutch pedal)... Just don't touch the brakes!! :)

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Lastly for this weekend, here's an overall progress pic of the truck (something we all forget to do in our threads). The cab now sits 75mm higher thanks to all the factory parts from the donor prime mover. The wheel arches are un damaged unlike the originals. Once lifted, I had to...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Here's a pic of the upright 4" x 2" C sections clamped in place. Gives you an idea how it'll all work.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

With the cab lifted (more on that later) it was back to the back, and on with the mast build. While I was playing with the cab I had 4 roller pins spun up to suit the rollers I had on order from TVH the forklift mob (ex Belgium). I welded the pins into the pre drilled holes on the rear plates...

    New Mog Life

Hello! I've had nothing to do with Portal Axles, but have seen plenty of gearboxes and final drives with a lot more wear than that... I personally wouldn't be too worried. What does the surface of the larger gear look like?

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

A lot of Euro trucks have a blindspot mirror mounted on the passenger door pointing at the wheel for that blindspot... Might be worth finding one of those.. I plan to fit one to our truck.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

However... getting the front cross member out of our truck has been a little more fun. For some daft reason I thought that if I ground the top off the rivets they'd just 'tap' out.... Heads up, they don't. I've had to drill all of them out! The replacement had better fit! One thing I know...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

As was removing the front cross member from the donor truck. It was bolted in. 10 min with a rattle gun had it out! This had to be swapped as the jaw would be in the wrong place to suit the bumper if I tried to use the original. When the cab was in the lower position, the bumper off the donor...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Whilst waiting for rollers and pins for the rear spare wheel mast I decided the time had come to do the cab lift using the taller mounts from the donor truck. This allows me to use the good arches of the donor and gives me room underneath the cab to fit the turbo and intercooler from the donor...

    Portland 1222AF Adventures

Yup, Storz. We have them on our South Australian CFS (Country Fire Service) trucks. We only really use the 100mm fittings to suit a '64' hose. The smaller fittings we use are known as forestry/wajax fittings.

Very nice! Lots of gear came with the trucks then! Late Storz fittings too!! Our local brigade would be glad of that lot! :) Whats the plan for the other truck? It'll be interesting seeing you get yours under that door if you put bigger wheels on....
