    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

With the rack supported by the cab and clamped loosely in place, it was time to un-clamp it from the body and tip the cab.

Yeah, the back of the rack matches the top of the body, The sides taper down bring the front of the rack to only 10" tall.

    1120AF/1124AF Chassis Suitability

Hi fella. Our 1222A had that middle seat in it, and occasionally I've had an adult in it, but you wouldn't want to go far sat in it as you have to duck to see out and have very little leg room. It would be fine for a child (if allowed) up to 10 or 12. There is a fella on here who iported 2...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi fella. He's a 'Case 234' which is a Mitsubishi underneath. He came to me with huge hours for a small tractor (5500). I gave him a huge service, a paint job, and made a self level loader for him as there wasn't one available that was compact enough to suit this tractor. He's been a valuable...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

So after a slow start, I got back to it. Slowly piecing together the roof rack base atop the cab. Unlike the body where everything is square and symmetrical, the cab has slopes, tapers and nowhere really firm to stand on the roof. With step ladders and wooden props we got there though. Here's...

Talking of said horns the time has come to make the rail that will carry the horns and form part of the roof rack.... This rail is 40" long and 4" wide. First pic is of the rail, and the second pic is of the horns on the rail. That's a 12" set square in the pic for scale. Those in the US will be...

Getting into it then! Just a few points re spray on insulation... If there's a leak you don't know about, its hard to find with spray insulation... If you want to run any new wires, or replace broken ones, they have to be on top of the insulation... and if you damage any external panels, it...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Another weekend in the workshop and the roof bars are taking shape. With both sides in place, I'm happy with the scale. I have 4 x 7" spot lights coming, so I can build them and the horns into the rack. I've also started fabricating the 6 mounts that will fit into the gutters and support the rack.

There's a story to these plates... Back in the middle of the thread I think... From memory they're a well designed mod to increase the oil capacity in the portals to assist with heat dissipation.. :)

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

Spot on. The only drawback with the way I have done it is that by having the outer support pivot points of the 4 point system at the front then means that the travel between body and chassis at the rear is huge... (hold a ruler at one end and twist it at the other). If the outer support pivots...

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

Hi Alloy. Not really, though doing it the way I have has assisted in keeping the overall height at 3.55m. I have the pivot points in the center of the rail as I think that's where they need to be, and the 50mm chassis rail to body rail travel is at 50mm as the pivot center to rail distance is...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Nah, it'll be a full roof rack, with 4 spot lights, and a large (K5LA) horn hidden in the middle. It's all going to be tied to the cab with a 30/40mm gap for sideways movement. I'm using the body to build of so it matches, then the cab can be adjusted to sit where it needs to. :)

1958 Unimog 404 with cabover flex

If there's room in there, a Cummins 6Bt and ZF5-42 would work well. I designed a conversion plate to mate the ZF5-42 to a Land Rover LT230 full time 4x4 transfercase (which was then copied and marketed by a Reece Myers in the UK), which i fitted into my Land Rover 101. It was a perfect engine...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

By the time it had got dark and cold last night I had one frame end tacked up. Here it is in position. At the moment it's not quite long enough to cover/protect the top of the snorkel... but without the snorkel fitted, it looks too long... hence the idea of two snorkels so it all becomes...

With the first pieces of the basket ends bolted securely, I could clamp the uprights in place, and then transpose the roof shape onto the rear uprights of the basket sides... Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

With the left upright 'ladder' all welded up, and the right upright welded, it was time to look at the top section. The roof rack will be self supporting on the gutters of the cab, but to get it's position exactly right, I have to work backwards and use the uprights as support and locators...
