Winch or not and if so sizing of one

We have rear and center lockers, not the front. And I agree about the anchor point. During a "big rig recovery" demo at Overland Expo East the presenter claimed you needed a tree with 1" diameter per 1k lbs. Need some rather large trees.

Winch or not and if so sizing of one

Hey guys, we are considering adding a winch to our truck. I know nothing about winches and have never used one. Our truck is coming in around 19k lbs and is 24v. Sherpa4x4 in Australia seems to have some pretty good pricing and can supply either a 25k lbs or 17k lbs 24v winch with synthetic...

    Transmission Question

So, just watched a YouTube video about double clutching. Once question I have is our transmission similar to a 10 speed semi in how it operates? This video instructed not to put the clutch pedal to the floor unless you were stopped. When shifting at speed just depress 2-3 inches and shift. Is...

    Headlights for 1120

So I see lots of cars with driving lights built in (ours does) but searching online for some 24v aftermarket ones seems a bit tricky. Lots of lights but more say for off-road use. We want more light but do not want to blind oncoming traffic. Anyone know of some good quality DOT approved LED...

    Headlights for 1120

Thanks guys, I ended up ordering some P45T H4 Halogen bulbs https://www.ebay.com/itm/161794671964. The bulbs that are in the truck are the R2 globe type with the P45T base. They were 55w/50 and I ones I ordered are 100/90. Hopefully way brighter. Was not able to find any LED's in the USA (just...

    Headlights for 1120

Does anyone know of an headlight upgrade for a ln2? Ours are pretty dim and would like something way brighter.

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

We have temporarily moved the project/truck to Florida to visit with my parents. While here we will continue to work on projects and the first one is the interior cushions. We are about half done and will hopefully finish in a couple of days. As a side benefit we were able to test the new cab...

    Transmission Question

Ok, thanks guys. It is sounding like what I am experiencing is normal. Just a learning process, strange though as the engine is very smooth and one would expect the same from the gearbox. Thanks for the warning about the brass gear stay adjustment. Will make sure and figure that out before I start.

    Pneumatic clutch assistance.

Still trying to figure the EPC out but it looks like it might have been an option for our truck with the OM366LA (the EPC shows you a picture but if it was not installed will not give you the part number). Have you checked the EPC to see if it was an option for your truck?

    Transmission Question

Changing all the oils (besides the engine oil which I have already done a couple of times) is on my TODO list. I mainly notice it going in the lower gears as I am trying to get moving. The upper gears not so much so. The truck currently has around 50k miles on it. I will look in the manual but...

    Transmission Question

Shifting up, down does not seem to be a problem.

    Transmission Question

Hi all, if I attempt to shift before the engine revs drop I will get a little grinding. Have taken to shifting very slowly but is there some form of adjustment that needs to be done to correct this or is this expected? Would be nice to shift more quickly when needed.

The interior is all back in and AC wired, just need warm weather to give it a try. We did though decide not to use the "universal" interior trim piece. It was a rather large bit of plastic and would cover and hang down taking up valuable space. So, I will make up my own and trim in vinyl. Way...

We are back in Charlie's shop (the welder). Since we are now living aboard probably the first time anyone has slept in his shop (yeah, he pretty much just laughs and walks away, he is starting to expect stuff like this from us). Anyway, we are back in because we needed a bit of metal work for...

Well, other than cold, wet and windy the boat delivery went well. Now just waiting on the final paperwork, so back to the truck build. We got back to the truck last night and just to feel like making a little progress I installed the heating strip in the rooftop AC (6,000 BTU, which is plenty...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hey, this question is solely for my learning about steel (I have no background with metal design and fabrication). Did you reinforce the hole in the chassis that the bushing is in? Sort of a plate that would have an identical sized hole that would bolt to the surrounding holes in the chassis to...

They also approve the rail on subframe. It is in the MB body builder guide and was also used on our fire truck body.

I should be hearing today from the company in Germany that says they can get the parabolic springs. If they are not crazy expensive and bolt to the existing mounts we will probably give them a try. Not sure though if it is a good idea to mix the regular leaf springs in the front with parabolic...

I am no expert, just a DIY builder so take any advice with that in mind. Our truck is about 11' 6" to the top of the A/C. This allowed 6' 6" interior headroom. Our roof and floor panels are 83mm thick so that makes the outside dimension 7' high. I think this is about average for trucks like...
