Unimog U1300L 435 1986 - Restore to former glory & add custom camper

Yup, remember that now you say it. The 'spyder' hub system is actually a good system too. If it's like the system here in OZ once you are used to it it's simple. Still see lots of semi trailers being towed around with wobbling duals as the wheels have not been centralised! :)

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Jon. No, I didn't. Where that hole is, the chassis is double plated. Two stamped pieces of 6mm steel giving me 12mm of chassis to locate on. The bush is brass and being softer is the 'sacrificial' piece. As it's 60mm round it still has a reasonable surface area in contact with the...

Unimog U1300L 435 1986 - Restore to former glory & add custom camper

Coming along nicely. How are you planning on getting the wheels up and down from the roof? Quite a bit of weight to have up there.. :)

Lastly, weld it all up and put the bolt and washers in. I've made the bush 24mm wide. Both the chassis and the drop plate together are 24mm wide, so the bolt and washers are only there to support and secure the bush, whilst allowing it to move a little. There will be no grease points on these...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Next up is a support leg each side, so the bush only acts as a locator and pivot for the small amount of movement that will be here. The support leg has a piece of plate welded into its base, and that plate has a slight radius on it to allow for movement. The leg and bush on each side share the...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

I've chosen to utilize two 60mm holes in the center of the chassis for the front to mounts/supports. These are double chassis thickness as they have a second plate which helps hold the front spring rear hanger in place. Being so close to the spring, this seems like a good place for a body mount...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi all. So, the next few posts over the next few weeks are prob going to provoke some discussion... 4 point mounting and how I'm going about it. I've done a lot of reading on here, listened to lots of people on their take on it and how to do it, how not to do it, if it's even needed etc etc...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

Seems this is a hot topic at the moment... I have just asked Pairoa how he's going with the flex on his 6x6 build, as he was carrying out some twist tests and I'm at that point too... Anyone got access to what Merc recommend for a 1222A? I have a plan in my head which I've started to build...

Merkabah: MB 2626 AK 6x6 tipper to expedition truck conversion

Here's a quick cross section sketch of how I plan to do the mount. I think this setup will be fine on my 4x4 truck as the body is only 6m long... In theory it would work on your 6x6 too as the rear pivot on yours only needs to be between the two rear axles. The tail of your chassis could be...

Merkabah: MB 2626 AK 6x6 tipper to expedition truck conversion

Hi again Paiora. Did you have any more progress on your chassis twist tests and where the center line is sitting on your truck? I'm at that point now so interested in what you have found. I've decided to go for it and start building my 4 point system. I believe that the chassis 'twist...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Ian. Yeah, it's something I'm putting a bit of thought to, as having run Land Rovers, they seemed to collect the stuff inside! I'm thinking along the lines of 2 3" snorkels mounted on the front of the body, with two decent air filter boxes and a closable tap inside. The time spent now pitting...

Unimog U1300L 435 1986 - Restore to former glory & add custom camper

I've gone for the sunken floor option, as several people have made the point that having the lower area is a good place for kicking boots off when it's raining outside etc. A good mud collection point that can be rinsed out instead of walkinging it into the living area. Add to that, my wife is...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

This weekend was a busy one... I've managed to turn my 12 tonne usable truck into a 220HP go-kart!! The crane is sold and has gone off for a new life on a Unimog, and I have a tray to sell. I had several hours with the hot pressure washer removing a wheelbarrow load of soil from the chassis...

    Tatra vs MB crewcab 6x6

Yikes! You like challenges eh! That's tall money. Dont forget that independant suspension is all well and good, but there are a huge amount of bushes and moving parts open to the elements... With the HL7 axles on the Merc you have a lot less stuff to worry about. Re box removal, if you build it...
