Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

From Hoi An I continued past De Nang heading North, passing over the legendary Hai Van Pass, made famous by the guys on Top Gear, ironically they did not even see the best parts of Vetnam, but the episode is epic. Hai Van Pass is a very beautiful mountain pass with views of the blue sea...

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

The road was a typical mountain road, narrow and a bit bumpy with occasional potholes, but generally pretty good. Luckily I made it to Kon Tum just as night fell. It was dark, and I realized that both my head light and tail light were not working. Luckily, half of the bikes in Vietnam are like...

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

Free tea and bananas were great at 1st, a few chain tightenings or general maintenance type things done to the bike on the house....but then it was free beers and rice wine, and eventually free diners. The kids light up with excitement when they see me coming, running to the street and yelling...

Thanks Herbie, that Chinese crap bike is no Astro, but it is good to be back on the road.

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

The next day was a long drive, as I wanted to drive the ninh van bay peninsula to check out the recommendation from the family dinner group before continuing up the coast. I had read it was great back in the day as well, but now it kind of sucks. The drive out was a waste of my time, I only...

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

I get to Cat Tien in the afternoon, and word must have spread about the shakedown, as soon as I check in the woman running the hotel I stayed at gave me some cake! Ok, so it might have been her birthday, but the cake was delicious aside from the candle chunk I found inside. There was an Aussie...

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

2 years driving through Mexico, Central America, and Colombia and I paid 0 bribes, 1 Hour driving in Vietnam and I am already losing the battle. Oh well, 20 bucks let me keep my bike, I think it was worth it. Now, I am not claiming to be a master at avoiding bribes, but they certainly tried...

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

Thanks man, bummed about the Astro, and it is a tough decision to pay to park a 14 year old van indefinitely when I have no income, but I couldn't let it go just yet, the hands are doing well so I think I will finish fixing it up once I get back from S.E.Asia to use around Socal.

Vietnam (Moto): Hello sir, what are you looking for?

So it all started with a 2 year trip in my Chevy Astro Van south of the border. Then I did a 3 week fly n ride moto vacation in Thailand, and a 3 week fly n ride moto vacation in Ecuador. This time I was looking to take the van back down south, but half way through repairs I found out I had...

4x2 Gas or 4x4 Diesel for South America

I am not familiar with either vehicle, and while I had AWD south of the border, I have read several people make the statement that they could count on 1 hand the number of times they "needed" 4X4 down there. As you said if you are not going too far off the beaten path and intentionally looking...

    2018 Chevy Express 2.8 Duramax

Recent minor health issues have me contemplating ditching the old Astro, I just cannot work on it anymore, thinking of a new Express, from limited research it seems there have been very little changes over the years, but anyone more familiar know of a reason to avoid the 2018's? I am looking at...

    ARB fridge or ???

Must have bought my ARB in 2011, maybe 2012, took it through Mexico, Central America, into Colombia using it over the course of 2 years. I then let it sit for several years, plugged it back in a few months ago and it still running just as cold as when I bought it. I wasn't rock crawling, but...

    DIY on-board shower components questions.

I have thought about adding black PVC pipe to the top of the van and having a gravity fed shower, some people add adapters to hook up air compressors and add some punch to them but that is unnecessary for my needs. For now I just use a sceptor tank as I already had an extra, and added a bug...

Toilet Solution for LONG TERM Overlanding trips

Restaurants and hotels worked well for me 2 years south of the border, I carried a folding chair/garbage bag for emergencies, but never needed it. I am going to come back to this thread when I have more time to read it rather than skim, but I am not carrying a bag of peat moss around with...

Need portable power for my CPAP machine

Im no power expert, but I would put in an auxilliary battery and try and safely hook it directly to that, avoid an inverter as they are not efficient, but if you can connect straight to the battery you could use the alternator, or a solar panel to charge the battery. A bit pricey maybe, but you...

Astro Van (Mid Size) VS Full Size?

I did 2 years living out of my Astro and Hostels as I drove around Mexico, Cental AM, and Colombia, at times it was cramped, but I also had a lot of crap. I actually think for south of the border it is a great van, as I found myself in tight spaces all the time, and it did not necesarily stand...

    ARB Fridge question

Just hold the + and - temperature buttons for 5 secondsto enter recalibration, then you can increase by hitting +, or decrease by hitting - to whatever it is off by. Then leave it alone for 5 or 10 seconds and it will blink and then display at the new reading.
