How deep can 4x4 vans get you? Beginner questions...

I drove my van to Colombia South America, others have driven the same van further. Mine was AWD, I may go 4X4, but I do not need to. I do not know the trails you listed, but if you can sacrifice rock crawling, a van can get you just about everywhere. The Astro would be small for a family, but...

    Van heating thread

2 years south of the border I was probably hard wired less than 5% of the time, maybe 10. If you primarily camp in campgrounds that would change things, but relying only on power can really limit your adventure.

OVERLANDING with an AWD ASTRO/SAFARI VAN?

Not a general one, but there are several of us here with individual threads that include pics, that is right Laz I am still calling you out, you thought I would let you off the hook!

OVERLANDING with an AWD ASTRO/SAFARI VAN?

50 psi on sand, must have felt like a pair of ice skates!

    Undercoating Question

Zero experience, but I will be using POR-15 in the next few months on my van, so will watch where this goes.

    Astro AWD "Stroverlander"

Great man now worries, I assumed the CVs were ok as most who keep a reasonable lift but were worried do not seem to come back complaining, so will shoot for a similar lift, as I would like to push it a tad further. Yes starting to take parts off the van, pretty sure by the time I actually do...

    Astro AWD "Stroverlander"

Hey strovelander, now that time has passed, how have the CV joints held up, do you find you replace them often or is it negligible since your lift is reasonable?

    A Good Scarf

Also a buff owner, have one I wear to protect the back of my neck from the desert sun....now I need one for winter temps, though it has been sufficient for chilly Socal mornings. Small, quick, and I forget I am even wearing it though I have never warn one for warm weather yet as mentioned, the...

And the Earth Shook: My 3 Week Motorcycle Adventure in Ecuador

Thanks guys, had enough power even in the mountains to cruise along without issue, though I only weigh 150+/- which is a huge help. The problem was the small frame, it got a bit uncomfortable, but let me go just about anywhere I wanted.

And the Earth Shook: My 3 Week Motorcycle Adventure in Ecuador

Ok, so I have to get the bike back to Quito, still had a few days to go so decided to try my luck on the coast and see if I catch any waves. Not the best time of year for waves but not the worst, so I head west. The roads straighten out and turn flat for awhile, but the coast itself has nice...

And the Earth Shook: My 3 Week Motorcycle Adventure in Ecuador

Who on earth made the call to build Banos at the bottom of this Volcano?? You can see Banos down by the river laying right in the path Lava would seem to take when the big one comes. After leaving Banos I continued on South, eventually arriving in Cuenca. Cuenca is apparently a beautiful...

And the Earth Shook: My 3 Week Motorcycle Adventure in Ecuador

While in Ecuador I received word that I had lost a great friend in a motorcycle accident the other day, I was originally going to leave it just on my blog, but have reconsidered. We all know the risks, but cannot have too many reminders, though this is more travel related La surfista del...

And the Earth Shook: My 3 Week Motorcycle Adventure in Ecuador

So it took awhile to find "the guy". Spoke to a woman, who sent me to a tire guy, but he tells me he only does cars. Couldn't give me any help as to where I should go, I assumed he didn't want to help the gringo. Turns out, after several car only tire guys, a moto guy is hard to find in Otavalo...

New KLR and new to off-road riding. Tips?

How is the progress coming along? There are MSF courses for off-road, I am planning on taking one, although I am ok (barely) in the rough stuff. I am currently doing 3 weeks in Ecuador, and dropped the DR200 I rented twice within 5 minutes tackling sandy switchbacks. Sand is hard enough, add...

    long trip on lightweight bike

Loved this so much, decided on another Fly N Ride. Finishing up the trip, still catching up on the posts, here is my newest adventure on a DR200, put just over 3000 miles on it with a large mix of dirt roads involved.....my body hurts, I will never sit on another DR200 again haha. Here is the...

Earthquakes, Andes, Volcanoes, and more..... So, after spending 2 years driving around Latin America while living out of my Van, I returned to the workforce to be reminded it sucks. I needed desperate relief, so last year I took a 3 week vacation to Thailand (A Tale of Highs and Low-Sides: My...

Expedition 65: A Wander Through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru

Just finishing a 3 week moto adventure in Ecuador, great country, great riding. I recommend you stick to the mountains unless you are dead set on the beaches....they are fine but were nothing special, the mountains are where it was at! If you do hit up the coast, rather than stay at the...
