    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

Well, we agree that patterns are valuable. The pattern among Land Rover reviews is of vehicles becoming completely disabled--terrible for remote touring. It could be worse--they could spontaneously combust.

The shadow is cast by Land Rover's poor reliability statistics--not by me, and not by publishers reporting those statistics. The evidence does not support the suggestion that Land Rover unreliability is a problem of the past and that it is limited to presumably unimportant problems relating to...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

This feels like more brand-loyalist nit-picking that obfuscates consistent and clear take-homes. I found zero publishers concluding on record, based on evidence, that Land Rovers are generally reliable. (Publishers care about credibility and reputation.) Every evidence-based review I found...

False. 1. JD Powers -- lowest 2020 dependability rating in the U.S. Link: https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2020-us-vehicle-dependability-study 2. OSV -- This review of multiple consumer surveys concludes, categorically, that "Land Rover and Range Rover are not reliable. It might...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

Hi - that's me. I like discussing reliability. I like discussing reliability because I like remote touring, and for remote touring reliability matters. Land Rover has put itself in a pickle with Defender. On one hand, Land Rover has billed and spec'd Defender as a remote touring vehicle--a...

Which is why Land Rover's chronic unreliability is so perplexing, even impressive. I was considering ordering a 110. I configured one online: https://build.landrover/C551BA24 It fit my criteria for a touring wagon: hefty 1900 lb payload, mid-size, off-road capable, and even steelies. But what...

Defender's payload exceeds that of any other 4x4 wagon available in the U.S.--Expedition, Tahoe, Suburban, and 200 Series. This accommodates the extra weight of bringing a Land Rover service representative on your trip, so that they and not you can hike out and make the call to activate...

...Which is one reason why good remote touring wagons have been so rare in the U.S. market. In my book, it needs all of these attributes: - Mid sized - big enough to haul stuff, small enough to navigate terrible two tracks at the ends of dirt roads - Off road capability - ground clearance...

Here - this article might engender rage and hate. "The new truck, with all of its computer-controlled components, runs the risk of being too complex, too hard to modify, and just not rugged or dependable enough to be a serious off-road machine, not to mention its high price tag and expensive...

If it's like the 80, you'll need to relocate your spare with the 24 aux. Pro aux: more overall capacity, separate capacity Con aux: relocate spare, weight aft of rear axle Pro 40 gal: weight between axles, spare stays put, fewer parts, less complex, fewer things to go wrong Con 40: less...

They should. It would help to assuage valid consumer concern about reliability, or, at least financial aspects thereof.

After I posted those JD Power statistics I noticed that Expedition Portal had posted a podcast about the Defender (in addition to the video review that I'd earlier seen). Both were really informative and well done overall. I was pleased to see that the podcast does discuss reliability briefly...

I don't offer this to be contrarian or to compel love or hate, but, for purposes of objective discussion of Defender's remote touring merits, Land Rover's bottom-of-the-class dependability must play prominently. Land Rover literally builds the least dependable vehicles sold in the U.S.

I thought that part of Scott's otherwise excellent review was incomplete; it's something most LR enthusiasts seem to gloss over. But statistically Land Rover is still in 2020 the least reliable car maker. It casts a long shadow over Defender. Wrangler and Defender's off-road capabilities...
