Front bumper for an 86 4X4 pickup

My son got an 86 4X4 pickup a few months back. It is in great shape but the stock front bumper is pretty wimpy. I am looking for a simple bumper that is more substantial then the stock one. I do searches and the ones I find are more elaborate and money then I am willing to spend. Any...

How much thought do you put into tread depth on new tires?

I have always been more concerned about the strength of the side wall.

Ideal Overland setup for family + dog?

I had a van for a while, it wasn't 4X4 but we used it to pull a camper. Mine was very comfortable and well appointed. When traveling the kids could not even reach each other, this is a big deal with young kids. They could plug in their Xbox, each seat had its only controls for radio, front...

Ideal Overland setup for family + dog?

Those look like they maybe what the OP wants. Years ago my parents had a setup like this, it would be heavier and maybe not the best idea for rougher trails.

What vehicles make the best Expedition platforms?

Any 4X4 4Runner is or could be used for off-roading, just depends on how much modification you want to do. Anything that didn't involve harder off roading (a very subjective term) a Toyota 4Runner would probably be my top choice. Even then a modified 1st gen would be towards the top of my...

500-lb capacity hitch rack from Harbor Freight

Mine is made by different manufacturers rated 500 pounds I did bend it off roading and I've never cared more than a hundred hundred pounds if even that. I change the original bar that went into the hitch with a thicker one. I also use a ratchet strap to secure it to keep it from moving

500-lb capacity hitch rack from Harbor Freight

Any of those cans are fine for storage. Sitting on a rack bouncing behind a vehicle will be far more abusive than storing them. We have some of the less expensive scepter civilian fuel cans at work and they aren't has thick as the Military ones but they seem better than other cheap ones. I...

500-lb capacity hitch rack from Harbor Freight

Hanging a lot of weight like that can affect how the vehicle drives. You have a heavier vechicle so that won't be as much of an issue. Another issue if you cannot open the back of your vehicle unless you take off the cans even then the hitch hauler will be in the way. My main concern would...

    kayak vs. canoe

The recreational kayaks are far more stable than a canoe. The sit on sill never take on water. If you do fall off it will probably right its self, if not can you flip it over easily. it won't sink unless it is destroyed. The only time I have been out and see a kayak flip is when my 10 year...

    kayak vs. canoe

I have a canoe and it hasn't moved an inch since we bought kayaks. I have seen so many people get in arguments (myself included) with the other rower in a canoe. With a kayak you can padle how you want and go where you want. They are far more stable than a canoe and much easier to control...

    on-board air

For those of you who want allot of air why not go with a belt driven compressor that runs of you engine. It doesn't get more powerful than that.

    CB radio suggestions

your antenna and how you mount it is the most important thing. Get a new antenna, new mount and new cable. I have an everhardt antenna that has been great, many like firestik. Mount the antenna to the body (to clean metal) of you vehicle as high as possible. Don't mount to fenders, doors...
