FWC's cannot accommodate a roof-top AC unit.
The factory can build some floor plans with a rear-wall mounted AC which takes the place of the rear window, but it's not simply "pull out the window and stick in the AC" because the wall framing is a different build...strengthened for the AC.
Probably winter time is best for buying, and more for sale at that time.
Are you familiar with the Wander The West forum's Gear Exchange? Many FWC's and others are posted there. At the top of the Gear Exchange page is a "Pinned" or "Sticky" post with a compilation of recent ads. Go to the...
Here's a story (post #47) of a guy who bought a used wood-framed camper that was said to be used very little and stored in a climate controlled garage, and then under a canopy for a couple years at which time the wood rot was discovered. Follow his roof repair story and then decide if a FWC...
Neat story! Thanks for sharing. The camper fits the truck like a glove.
The fact that everything still works after 25+ years is a testament to how well these campers are built.
I'd definitely order the "Heavy Duty Payload Package". Gives you several hundred pounds more of payload for all that overlanding gear.

The suspensions have been completely re-designed in the last couple of years. I believe 2007 would be a 9K GVWR on leaf springs, whereas a new 2500 has a 10K GVWR and has coils at all 4 corners. I'd love to know how a new one handles when loaded up.
Glad to see you are really doing your homework. Yep, I would go with the 3500. If you plan on adding heavy duty bumpers, winch, etc, it all eats into your payload. I'm of the school that it's not good to exceed your GVWR on a regular basis--not because the truck can't handle it (the...
I can't speak to the comparison of your 4Runner to a V8 pickup, don't know. A buddy has a 2001 Dodge with the 5.9 gas and tows a large boat and a toy hauler all over with it, over 120K miles and still going strong.
Of course the diesel will out-perform any gas motor at the higher elevations...
Adam, I'd stay away from the '07.5 through 2012 diesel models if you can. They had an emissions system that relied on re-generating ("re-gen") of the DPF and if the truck was not driven hard all the time, things would clog up and cause problems; they also returned poorer fuel mileage than new...
It seems the boxes would have to be removed, because you lift up the camper a bit via the jacks, then drive out from under it. The boxes, when swung open, would hit the jacks when driving forward.
The PW was shown at the Overland Expo as an introductory showing, and the head of Ram truck engineering was there. I asked him the payload question and his reply was "1500 lbs."
The info on the PW usually comes from "boiler plate" info on the 2500 series, which have a 10000 GVW with the 6.4 or...
Or get an aluminum flat bed to save the weight, and go with the FWC flat-bed model. :)
Would the few inches you save by going chassis-mount be worth the expense, and the likely harder-to-sell aspect when it comes time to sell? You could use the under-the-flatbed areas for storage by mounting...
