Marty Fletcher of Utawesome Performance knows the Magnum engines inside out. Check out his website and tech info. He sells a kit to repair the intake bottom.

A good engine build article...
I have a 1998, same drivetrain. Very stout...basically a 1/2 ton truck under the skin. These engines are noted for burning a lot of oil due to the poorly designed intake bottom cover--the gasket blows out and oil gets sucked into the intake tract. Unless it's been fixed with new shorter bolts...
For a family of 5, I would highly recommend a flatbed with the side door entry. This way, there can be people at the dinette, someone cooking or using the sink, and yet there's room to go in/out of the camper and upper bed without all the "pardon me let me get by you" gyrations of a regular...
I just started using the peppermint oil linked below; so far so good. I think it's a better thing to be spraying under your hood than chemicals or urine. There is only a faint peppermint smell, or none at all, when you go for a drive depending on how many days ago you applied it. They...
You gotta love a 4,000+ lb payload!
I'll be searching for the same truck. The more I read about the '04-up Super Duties which all have the Dana Super 60 front axle...the more I like 'em. Upgraded everything it seems, and the high pinion style is an added bonus.
If it's just you, a slide-in will work fine. It's when there's more than one person that the narrow isle becomes a problem moving about...flatbed def the way to go with 2 or more people.
Needs engine. Looks to be rust free. Fair price of $1,500.

That Newaire reminds me of the Vixen motorhomes. Built for 3 or 4 years, '86 to '89. BMW diesel engine and manual transaxle. I wanted one so bad when they were new but could not afford it; still have the brochure I sent away for, though.
I can't answer your questions, but just want to say NICE RIG!
I have often dreamed of that very set up--a utility body with a full-size door into the habitat. Was the cut-out or space for the door already there?
Another consideration on having a shop convert an older van to 4x4... is finding a shop that does quality work in the as-promised time frame, and will be there to stand behind their work. If you don't already have such a shop lined up, you might find no one around that wants to take on such a...
I wouldn't think there are enough high-mileage Transits out there to ID any "common problems at high mileage"? I'd definitely go with the Transit--ease of repairs if you need to visit a dealer, and lower repair/parts costs. Personally, I'd avoid the twin turbo model for reliability/cost of...
Thanks, Jeff. Yeah, the simplicity and reliability of diesels is gone now. $5,000 just to replace the exhaust components when they quit working.
The only way I could afford to own a new diesel is by buying the extended warranty and trading it in when the warranty is about to expire...
Jeff, I always enjoyed reading your articles on the Dodge. Good on you for taking it to almost 200K miles. I'm looking forward to your experiences with the new rig.
Did something about the Ford sway you to it instead of a new Ram? I'm considering a new truck and it's a tough choice.
I wonder what they mean by "Gross weight approx 14,000; empty weight approx 7040"? A 2500 would never have a GVWR of 14,000, and I would think the Tiger weighs much more than 7040.
@blupaddler Robb, what brand/model camper is that? I love the tip-out bed and pop top. Is it working well for you? That's a serious over-cab portion...guessing 5' ?
I vote to hold on to your current truck. They aren't making them like that anymore. :)
Excellent choices. I have some experience with FWC's and I agree the Grandby's slightly longer floor makes a big difference. Good choice on the long bed and Grandby!
I assume you will be designing in your own heater/furnace and stove since you didn't list it as one of your options.
The only...
^^ I was getting the same error.
This thread is quite long, but some good info. You'll see the springs were talking about in post #412.
