Atlanta to Moab, Valley of the Gods, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Etc

Enjoyed the report. Glad to make out who you were. Overlanding makes this a smaller world, indeed.

    Toroweap Backcountry

No worries. We enjoyed watching you amble by. Golden hour, for this photog, is thirty minutes before and after the sun hits the horizon.

Travelling Light, poking into the sweet spots of the southwest minimalist style.

Great report. I enjoyed your prose and photography. Zion is a special place.

    Toroweap Backcountry

Toroweap Backcountry - Part Two Sunday morning I woke up early to someone listening to NPR, of all things. A down-loaded podcast since there's no service of any kind there. Early, like six-early on one hand, but NPR on the other... Okay, I can put up with that. Then the goofing around, the...

    Toroweap Backcountry

We've been moto-camping for years, living in a mixed marriage of motorcycles; she on her Sportster 1200L and he on his CBR 1100 XX. We've manage to tote along enough to keep us warm, dry and fed, logging 20k miles throughout the West. Sleeping rarely came easy, though, and while eating out of a...

One-Way Ticket: Colorado to South Sudan

Extraordinary. I knew I should have been an artistic economist.

    Slumming with an iPhone

Nikon? Canon? Olympus? Apple? Are you listening?

    Slumming with an iPhone

Having a steady diet of medium format cameras from Hasselblad to Mamiya, shooting anything less felt like I wasn't taking the craft seriously. Acquiring in 35mm I felt compensated a bit with the heft of a pair of Nikon F3s and an array of fixed focal length lenses. Neither format suited well the...

    Kitchen Kit/Chuck Box

So many great chuck box designs and craftsmanship. Very impressive. I'm almost embarrassed to post this, but that hasn't stopped me before. I found cheater-retail set-up at our local Sportman's. Made by Portal, collapses into a pack 18"x6"x32" that stows easily. Erected it has three work...

RotopaX Gas Can Mounting Pictures (please)

I've been put off by the price, too, not to mention that the mount for my application is out of stock, so I tried my hand at fabricating my own mount, saving me enough bank to spring for more packs.

    Repurposed Spare Cover

I never thought of ten and two. Of course that'd work. As for the road test, I thought I'd observe from the RTT. Thanks for the tip.

    Repurposed Spare Cover

I'm not really into recycling, I'm just cheap. In researching jerry can mounts and places to mount them on the Gen III Monty (there really aren't any, though Inyo_man engineered this fine mount), I came across RotoPax, made by Great Outdoors LLC in Utah. They've created a clever pack (can) and...

    Repurposed Pelican

Thanks, Brian. It's passed the shake and rattle test.

    Replacing Header Gaskets

132k. And by the looks of my replacement gaskets, that would be a tough one to have fail.

    Solid versus Independent

Thank you. Certainly, lifting and modding IFS/IRS is difficult and expensive as I've checked out systems for the Montero, and I get the robust nature of solid axles. I see some of the spindly applications of IRS on some Honda products and wonder how they don't shatter under a minimum of torque...

    Solid versus Independent

In making the conversion from sports cars to expedition vehicles I took some solace in having independent suspension all around on the Gen III. But as I research and read I'm finding this isn't a preference for off-road excursions, but I'm not finding why. Can anyone shed some light here...

    Replacing Header Gaskets

Oh, no, never took it that way. No worries. My description of ticking certainly could be valve related, and I certainly appreciate the help of everyone here. I've also heard of connecting a fogger machine to the tailpipe and then checking around the manifolds for leaking vapor.

    Gen III Timing Belt Change

Yes, that's the rub here. All bolts retaining the PSP have been removed but nothing is budging. I need 1/4 inch clearance and the accessory mount would come right out. Great thanks for the link.

    Gen III Timing Belt Change

Elbow deep in this job and I can't get the accessory support plate that covers the timing belt clear of the power steering pump bracket. Any insight?

    Replacing Header Gaskets

Thanks, yes, I know that sound and that's not what I'm talking about. This is more of a pfft than a tick, and continues until the engine reaches op temp, then diminishes, indicative to me of the heat induced expansion of the compromised gasket. The nature of the sound goes sharper under load of...
