I acquired an InReach 1.5 (aka original, without a screen). This unit does function as a standalone bluetooth GPS even without subscription. Additionally, I was concerned about powering the unit in the car (because it requires two AA batteries) however it turns out that works fine via micro-usb...
Hey all,
I'm looking at purchasing an Inreach of some sort but the majority of the time I will not require the satcom functionality. In "standby subscription mode", will it still function as a bluetooth GPS for my ipad?
Here it is, I thought it was pretty interesting: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/671831525/bison-rolling-grill/description
Vs existing grilliput (cheaper @ $30): https://www.ucogear.com/portable-grills/grilliput-portable-grill-duo-gr--1?returnurl=%2fportable-grills%2f

I have the current version (Express) and it's pretty good. It supports caching maps and imports gpx no problem. For me one of the killer features is the ability to upload geotagged maps yourself. I'm surprised that it's not that popular, other offerings don't seem as good.
Yeah, after some googling it appears to be this https://www.amazon.com/TYT-TYT-TH-9800-Two-Way-Radio/dp/B00I53VUEY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493843908&sr=8-1&keywords=TYT+TH-9800
I saw that as well. I dont understand how radio propagation works, but I thought each band requires a different antena. How is this solved in this unit?
There are offroad oriented pups, like the Starcraft RT series (now called something else) or the Jayco Bajas. I'm afraid they'll be more then 2k though. One thing I've seen done is to pick up and older trailer for cheap and then flip the axel to get some clearance. One huge advantage of pups is...
Thanks for the insight. I'm mostly curious about the process though. Do these builders have a process for reliability testing or is it that these bumpers are overbuilt enough (and what does overbuilt mean) that they can handle the stress people throw at it?
That's Robert, that's very thorough. I've heard of ARB, Shrockworks and Calmini but not the other ones. For my own curiosity, do they do any stress testing (or other testing) or is there simply a history of reliability?
That's very cool maktruk, I didn't know that could be done. I can't quite...
Howdy everyone!
I'm curious how small custom fabrication shops ensure that their bumpers and recovery points are up to spec and won't shear under load? Part of the reason I'm interested in this, is because a vehicle I'm researchign (nissan xterra) doesn't have any obvious recovery points.

XTerra pro-4x, body on frame, 4 liter v6 and a factory locker in the back. Sadly discontinued, but that means you can find one for a good deal. Not as much aftermarket support as Jeep or Toyota, but enough if you want lift or armor.
Ah ok. For some reason I assumed that people move it out of stock location for wheeling reasons (that is, avoid hitting it on obstacles) but I guess it's because anything over 32" is tight fit.
