Chihuahuan Desert (Big Ben National Park)

Nice trip report and pics. Canoed the Rio Grande a few years ago with a friend at Christmas. It snowed and the wind blew upstream so hard that we couldn't move downstream for two days. Hunkered down in a hovel and drank beer. A great memory. I'm from the Land of Opportunity myself. Go hogs!

First Death Valley Trip: 4 Cold, Wet, Snowy, Wonderfully Awesome Days

Thanks for the trip report. I made my first visit to Death Valley at the same time. We (GF&I) spent 5 nights at Saline Valley Hot Spring. If it had been warmer we might not have stayed as long but the cold temps sure made the hot water appealing. If/when I do it again I'd spend less time at the...

Death Valley, 3 Days over the New Year

I was there at the exact same time....don't recall seeing your truck. Spent 5 nights at Saline Hot Springs then on to Eureka Dunes. On the way through Deckadera canyon ran into some guys in a "brand new" 4-runner stuck to the frame. Got them out. Titus canyon was spectacular. I'm too lazy I...

Convince me to get rid of my 4Runner for a Land Cruiser.

I've had a 62 for 20+ years and love it! My thought though is to keep the 4Runner. Buy a Baroud roof tent. If you go the LC route you'll probably end up with more gear and end up where you are now. Less is more. Stick with what you have and know and spend the money on traveling.

    Maxtrax

Bought mine a couple of weeks ago and used them within the first week.....on a stuck 4runner. They spun their wheels and burnt 5-6 of the "nubs." I know if says not to spin the wheels but invariably it seems like this is going to happen. No offer of reimbursement from the stuck guy but If you...

Baja 2400. Utah -> Baja Norte and back.

Nice report and I'm glad you guys had fun. I've done two trips to the Baja from Portland. Once all the way to Cabo....no real need to do that other than to say you've done it. The other was just South of Loreto which is far enough to get you to the good stuff. Personally, I think the reports...

Helton Hot Water and Shower System - POS

This horse is long past dead but I'm always late to the party anyway. I'm thinking about a shower and doing some research. Some folks apparently have had some good success with Helton and I've lurked around Mud and this site for a while and have read good comments about Kurt. Having read this...

    Roof top tent weight.

I have a Grand Raid XXL. It's sits on a 60 series Land Cruiser and I literally don't know it's up there when driving. This is a nice tent and I'm glad I bought it. Lot's of room for two adult and a KDSS or two.

Hard shell tent - are gas struts really better?

Here's my 2cents. I bought a JB Grand Raid XXL a couple of months ago. It sits on a lifted 60 series Land Cruiser on 33" tires so it's fairly tall. The tent itself sits on an Inti rack which provides a nice full length support for the tent. It's important to know that the rack has some rails...

    The Owyhee

This was a good trip report but I cringe every time I hear or read the name "Owyhee." The best that anyone can do for this area is to leave it alone. I know it's selfish to not want anyone to visit but it's so remote that you have to be going there to get there. I'm rambling. I need to spend...

    A440 replacement...which way to go?

The H55 is the best mod that I have done to my '88 fj62. The auto burned out at around 220k and I've now put around 20K or so on the H55. The auto should have never been installed in this cruiser in the first place. I now get better gas mileage and it has power even going up a grade. I'm...
