    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

Been down this path before on towing with others. It is why some in that conversation moved to LC200's and F250's. Bottom line is that per the spec LR D7 architecture is less than a 1/2 ton pickup. I'm fine with that. Everything is a compromise at some point. Example - air suspension prevents...

Not ignoring anything. The advertised tongue weight has dropped to 330 lbs as the SAE spec came into play. LR is less than a 1/2 ton pickup when compared to Ford. Good to know.

Not a subscriber to SAE, not going to pay $80 and the 330 lb rating is from LRs own web site for both the new Defender and Range Rover.

Generally agree except the math point is constrained by the spec: For light-duty full-size pickups (GVWR < 8,500 lbs.), SAE J2807 assumes that the tow vehicle includes any options with higher than 33 percent penetration; It assumes there is both a driver and passenger in the vehicle, each...

Here are the tongue weight rating of different vehicles. Assuming they are all following SAE J2807 are as follows: LR PLA D7 platform - 330 lbs F-150 - 500 lbs F-250 - 1,500 to 1,800 lbs In addition both GVWR and GAWR must be accounted for with the usual guideline that TW is 10%. Work your...

Chill out Blaise. Actually thanks for highlighting WHY the manufacturers have been all over the road and why the Defender and Range Rover tongue weight rating has been lowered to 330 lbs from the historical Land Rover rating of 770lbs, which was lowered to 550 lbs and now 330 lbs. Appears...

So same as the D5. That makes sense for the D7 platform. LR needs to update their brochures and web page notes. That said, 770 lbs is only 9% of the 8,200 lb trailer weight, on the low side for standard recommendations. For my LR4 I went with the Rhino hitch for this specific reason as LR was...

Ah, OK. The US LR web site does not have that note. So what is the maximum tongue weight rating for the Defender? Same as the Discovery 5? (assuming the D7 architecture is the driving factor)

The LR spec's are in lbs. Their 'notes' don't say the value is derated by total payload. The Range Rover, Discovery and Defender are all based on the D7 platform architecture. What was changed by going to the Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) aluminium platform ?

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

While the new Defender claims 8,201 lbs of towing capacity, the reality is much less actual capability when one considers tongue weight. From Land Rover's web site and brochures: Discovery 5 - Maximum coupling point (nose weight) (lbs) - 772 Defender - - Maximum coupling point (nose weight)...

Defender's "target audience" is LR3/4/Discovery5/Evoque owners. Growing beyond that audience will be difficult given the competition of Bronco/Jeep/Grenadier. Question is, where did the traditional "Discovery" customer go after the D5 was less than well received by the market? Will they come back?

Land Rover intro's features on the Range Rover at high margin and over time moves them down into the rest of the product line in volume, over many years. Some tech is useful, some is not. YMMV. Mirror dipping when selecting reverse has been around for a decade? It can be disabled. RYFM

Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) – introduction The complexity and cost are issues for me. The Defender I6 MHEV cost adder is in the range of $7500 when backing out the other stuff that gets thrown in on "premium". It shouldn't be that high to move from 4cyl to 6 cyl. That to me is an early...

The Defender P400 MHEV is basically the same as the Evoque MHEV HYBRID EVOQUE – SO WHAT IS MHEV? The only difference is the placement of the 48V battery/s. One item I haven't figure out yet is the power specs and if that relies on the electric motor for "peak" performance. If so I'm thinking...

Amazing people lose their keys, especially considering you can buy carabiner's by the dozen on the cheap and everyone has a belt loop. Bottom line, JLR has lost money for many years and that is the reality they need to face. It is why a new CEO, model deletions, redundancies and possible sale...

Excellent opportunity for Land Rover to demonstrate their new Software Over The Air update capability, that's if they trust it and it is operational. This could go the other way and demonstrate that LR is not ready with that capability which would highlight your point.

We've seen this before with the British car industry ........ Fashion. Recall the Triumph TR7, "The Shape of Things to Come". While it sold well volume wise, many say Triumph lost it way with the TR7 as they walked away from their identity. How is Triumph Motor Company today?
