i haven't noticed noise with the hardware adapter i happened to get so far, but good info. now i'm going to have to pop it open and see what it's using! it was sold as a buck converter but that's all i know (i've read that type of circuit can inject input and output noise depending on...
a quick bit of soldering and a power cable gets the thing suitable for more permanent vehicle use....

you have to be able to reach a local repeater for APRS to get a msg to the internet where people back home can watch your location (on http://aprs.fi) - so IMO it's not as useful as a satellite based messenger like Delorme or SPOT. it is a free service though, just part of the HAM community...
using my existing tablet and Kenwood ham radio, i only needed to purchase a TNC & cable (~$90) to get APRS up and running quickly and easily. this solution might work for others with a radio and even just a smartphone (Android or Windows only, iPhone guys see this recent post...).
