It was about this time I ordered the diamond plate aluminum tub. I'd been wanting one for years. I found a place that made diamond plate aluminum dog hunting boxes for trucks, and saw they knew how to bend and weld aluminum well. We emailed back-and forth a bit, and agreed on a design...
Ok.. next duty station was Ft Campbell, KY. I was only there for two years (and eight months of that I was in Afghanistan). But I made a lot of changes to the trailer based on lessons learned. One of the things I did was a cooler tray for the front.
Before I could start on that I had to swap...
The next trip (my buddy and I) was a three-week trip up to Alaska and Canada. I knew we needed to do something better than the tarp thing for securing gear. So I came up with the idea of a vinyl liner for the tub (which I had an upholstery shop make). Essentially, it was a large square vinyl...
So that's how the trailer was when I took it to Moab (2011). It was a two-day drive from WA, and I was carrying basically camping stuff to set up camp (stayed at a KOA outside of Moab). I wasn't "living out of the trailer". The trailer pulled just fine. Having the extra gas made me feel...
So after that first trip, I set about trying to fix the areas for improvement.
1. I decided larger (taller) tires were needed to raise the trailer up some. 205/75/15" is a very common trailer tire size on a 15" rim 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, so I got three of those (always have a spare!)...
So the first real trip we took with the lil' trailer was around the Olympic Peninsula with the TJ. We loaded up the Jeep and trailer, and headed out for a few days. Notice the spare tire bolted on the front of the trailer.
I put a board across the back of the trailer to use as a table for...
Fast forward to 2008. I'm stationed back at Ft Lewis, WA, and now have a wife and three kids (one heading to college), along with another Jeep (98 TJ). And I decided I wanted another little trailer, and I didn't have a lot of disposable income. I saw on Harbor Freight's website the black one...
In the beginning... We'll go back to around 1995.
I bought a little 4' HF trailer frame like the red one below to pull behind my little Willys flatfender (46 CJ2A) when I was stationed at Ft Gordon, GA.
It had a plywood floor, and I put wood slats on it for the four sides. I used it to haul...
Actually, its even better than that.
X-Bulls average about $75/pair (two boards). MaxTrax average about $300/pair (two boards); actually $300 - $325/pair depending on where you look.
So for the price of ONE SET/two (2) boards of the MaxTrax ($300) you could get FOUR SETS (eight (8) boards!)...
This has been driving me crazy - I knew "Diamond Deluxe" was part of a larger manufacturing company. Then I finally found it:
Diamond Deluxe (the maker of my trailer's tub) was a part of Jackson Creek Manufacturing Incorporated.
Aluminum Dog Boxes, Live Traps, Handling Equipment...

This is the awning I'm using: Car Tent Awning Rooftop SUV Truck Camping Travel Shelter Outdoor Sunshade Canopy | eBay
$115 for a 6.6' x 8.2' awning in gray. So far it has held up well.
They are a pain to set-up by...
Got my "Keep calm and air down" patch today. On the underside of my trailer's lid I glued some 2" strips of velcro, and I attach patches to them. Some patches are the ones I wore while in the Army.
Another vote for the X-Bulls. I have two pair. Used twice and they did fine. Perfect for the "Weekend Overlander". Get MaxTrax if you're going to be gone for months to years.
98 TJ with the 2.5 four-cylinder/five-speed/33" tires/4.88 gears/3.5" RE lift/lockers front & rear.
Probably one of the worst Wranglers you can tow with. Tall, short wheelbase, Detroit locker in the rear, and underpowered with the trailer. With the trailer, it struggles on hills on the...
One nice thing about using a HF or Northern Tool trailer frame, is that you get a bill of sale. At least in WA, I could just take that bill of sale to the tag office and get a tag for my trailer. It is more difficult in some states to get a tag on a home-made trailer frame.
And yes...
Slumberjack also sells something similar that connects the tent to your vehicle (like the Campfire tent above):

You're welcome! I'm glad I can be helping someone.
I'm a member of that "other forum" in that I pay I think $30/year. So it keeps ads and such from popping up (that drives me crazy too). It would be cool to see pictures of your nephew's trailer on that "other forum's" trailer thread.
Jeeps...
I've been thinking about this. After much thought, I have to say "No, it is not". Jeeps were made to be modified, and not everyone agrees on what looks good or not. I think this looks cool.
In 1996 I was in GA getting divorced and moving across the country. I needed to sell my 56 Willys...
I get my 20L Jerry cans from Deutsche Optik. They also have 10L and 5L cans.
They also have a 20L Jerry can in stainless steel (not cheap though).
