best way to add a pop top is get donor westy, drill all the spot welds at the gutters on both vevicles and make the swap, you get the real westy structural roof that way. many ways to do the swap--this is arguably the best and well documented over on thesamba.com.
i like the propex furnaces. my...
I have nothing against the 2wd vanagons, but for me i always felt like if i was gonna deal with the idiosyncrasies of owning a vanagon i was going whole hog and having a syncro to make the headaches worthwhile. and i live in the rockies and all me vehicles are AWD or 4WD. hell--i even have a 2wd...
there are many options for subaru oil pans out there, if you leave the stock pan it does hang to low and in my opinion only done by the people who "cheap out". if the pan is modified or even a newer offering of a cast pan, ground clearence is the same or better than stock vanagon. my 3...
i personally would look for a water cooled era van already converted to subaru power. cheapest will be ej22 2.2l subi. ive had 5 different vw syncros, 2 converted to subi power and id never have a VW 2.1 wasserleaker again. i have owned probably 15 air cooled VW's as well (60-70 bugs, busses...
VAN-tastic day on the mountain, 1 reason i built this van in the first place (motos are #1 actually). had some good snow recently and found LOTS of fresh untracked
im just north of you in lafayette if you wanna see my derek/ccv top, it is called a 14" i think. im sitting tight at 8'-9" give or take. what is a container height? i was thinkin they were 9'. i really like the added versitility of the "TV" top in every day use, i can stand up in it confortably...
my old VW syncro was to tall to get into my garage, but i had a set of stock tires to put on it and aired them down, i JUST cleared then, like rubbed the weather strip close. i was lucky to have 10ft ceilings in my shop so i put in a 9 ft header a long time ago so i could get it in without the...
CCV/derek is the man to talk to here, see this thread, this van was a fixed/hi top when he started
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/66644-New-ccv-build!!
and speaking from someone who was gonna do my own pop top build, his pricing is really fair for all involved
did you use the FORD filter and cap, or the aftermarket one from XXXXXX (enter your favorite flaps here) the one piece aftermarket filters are known gushers, ask me how i know. my "change filter" sensor was also a leaker when i picked up my van. i had all kinds of leaks when i received my...
Northwoodsman: a 230hp subaru SVX syncro really was the sweet spot here in CO. I would say mpg was the only drawback, it got 15 on a good day cruising at 80mph (i saw as low as 13 even) but remember a stock syncro was rated for 17mpg at the best of times--and only capable of sustained 65 (able...
the bumpers are aluminess that i scored off a sportsmobile used. the tail light guards do not effect the doors opening and are technically there to support the dual swing outs (spare tire and jerry can) that i left uninstalled so derek did not have to fight an extra thing when doing the build
HA-no worries Derek, i havent gotten around to posting it yet on this forum either. very happy with the build, working on the lower interior now. the flip bed was a combination of mine and dereks brainstorming (and my years in westfalias), and i could not be happier with it, gives a ton more...
my van was the build Colorado Camper Van did before this one, and i also have nothing but good to say. i have been meaning to post some pics and a small writeup, but have not gotten around to it yet (or wanna beat Derek to the punch) mine was a RB ford e350 though, slightly different
scoutkid, i am at mary jane almost every weekend, or any good midweek dump, keep an eye out for RB 7.3 chateau with CCV top on it. as soon as i get my propex installed i plan on beating the storms to the mtn.
