The garmin unit at 100 bucks is almost half the price of the bad elf. Any reason to spend the extra bucks?
Of course 100 extra gets you pretty close to just buying the cellular enabled iPad...
Hmmmmm....could you put them in the center console? That way you could leave the cords plugged in all the time and just pull them out when needed?
This wont help you out, but I saw somewhere a guy who built a single USB outlet in each of the passenger doors, just above the window or door lock...

Why MDF? Not as nice to work with and a good bit heavier than ply. And not that you'll be showering in the back of your 4R, but there's a chance of wet gear and spilled stuff that MDF wouldn't be too excited about.
