Is this an other off road /expedition trailer brake question?

If you were concerned about water shorting out the electric brakes, you could always put a HD switch in-line with the power wire going to the brakes (would be simple enough to do). Then just switch-off the power going to the electric trailer brakes when doing a water crossing, and turn them...

Pintle vs Lock&Roll vs Max Coupler

Yes; you can either have it locked in place, or unlocked and it'll rotate 360 degrees. I really like pintle hitches; easy to hook-up and unhook, and with adequate tongue weight I don't find it noisy. Plus I just like the military look. Not everyone likes them (hence all the other multi-axis...

Is this an other off road /expedition trailer brake question?

With a electrical brake proportional unit (like the P3) it is not "on-off"; instead you can adjust how much max power goes to the brakes, and it will gradually increase the amount of braking effort based on how fast you're trying to stop. If it was "on-off", you'd always be locking up your...

Is this an other off road /expedition trailer brake question?

My opinion based on having built a little expedition trailer, and studying and researching the heck out of this stuff. The brakes need to attach to the axle. You will need a real trailer axle (and not a gutted vehicle axle). I would recommend a simple leaf-spring suspension with a 3500lb...

    Trailer brake controller

Another vote for the P3. Been very happy with it, and easy to set up. You just have to find a place to mount it so you can reach the lever when you need to manually override the brakes, but not have it in your way. I ordered my P3 unit and all the vehicle 7-prong wiring stuff from etrailer.

Pintle vs Lock&Roll vs Max Coupler

I appreciate someone showing us another option to the multi-axis hitch possibilities (in this case, the XO). I still want to get a Dixon-Bates NATO rotating pintle hitch for my next hitch. http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/8742/4304/NRC2051-NATO-HOOK-ASSEMBLY.html To each his own.

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

I was asked how wide the trailer frame was, and if the tent-cot legs were wider than the frame. Sorry for the delay in answering the question. The HF-type 4' trailer frames are 40" wide; the legs on the tent cot are slightly wider then that. My trailer's tub has a WWII Jeep trailer flair at...

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

My ladder arrived today (see post above for specific ladder details). There were some cheaper ones on Amazon, and I swear some of them used the same pictures as the more expensive ones. But this one said it was rated for 330lbs; and at 10.5' was shorter than the average 12.5' ones I was...

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

I ordered a telescoping ladder from Amazon for my PBRTT. $78 dollars. This one extends out to 10.5'; more than I need, but it seems most ladders start out at 12.5' so I actually got a shorter one.

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

I'm sure that professional version collapsing ladder at $200+ is very sturdy, but kinda defeats the budget aspect of this PBRTT project. I will tell you that these Cabela's double size tent cots are extremely bulky and awkward trying to store and maneuver inside a vehicle. It was even a little...

Tire pressure questM416 type trailer with Jeep wheels for long distance highway trip.

There's the chalk method. Load your trailer how you plan on taking it, and then draw a line of chalk across the tread, and record the tire pressure. Drive slowly and straight maybe 20 yards or so (a couple tire revolutions), and check the chalk. If the chalk is worn off just in the center...

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

I originally had the tent 90-degrees, but thought it was too wide on the top of the trailer when folded so I rotated it. Plus that mounting system was not near as strong as it the way it is oriented now (bolted directly to the lid with no brackets). The spare tire is mounted on a Jeep TJ spare...

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

Thanks for responding. Looking for something more rigid that can go out at an angle and support a good 200+ pounds.

    Poor-boy RTT - now I need a ladder

Went on a three-week trip (I guess you could call it an expedition; I called it an adventure) up to Northern Canada recently (TX to Inuvik NWT, and back to TX), and we used a pair of Cabela's double-sized Tent-Cots (not a lot of head room, but fine for sleeping). After the trip, I decided to...

Need a removable ball hitch for my trailer. Where can I get one?

I bought the hitch ball coupler part at a place that sold trailers and hitch parts. They sell them in different widths, so I found one that was for a 2" wide mount (because they also sell them for 2.5" and 3" wide mounts). Something like these if you can't find one local...

Trailer Lid hinge: which side to mount them, pros & cons?

Mine opens on the driver's side. I prefer the ability to get out (99% of the time I'm the driver) and not have to walk around to the other side of the trailer to open it and do what I need to do. If I do pull off the side of the road and want to get into the trailer, it is probably on a...

Need a removable ball hitch for my trailer. Where can I get one?

I just made one for when I don't need the pintle hitch (like I do when I'm pulling it behind my Jeep). It is just bolted to a 2" piece of square tubing with a hole drilled for the hitch pin. I also used one of those adjustable height trailer hitches so the coupler will line-up with the ball...

Harbor freight offroad trailer, build log move, new tow vehicle.

So you traded your Jeep in for a Land Rover Disco 2? I traded my Range Rover "classic" for a KIA Sorento back in 2003. Those British 4x4s are EXPENSIVE to maintain. Of course, I wish I still had it sometimes. I'll be watching for info on your 5lb propane tank and mount.
