Any decent priced light weight winches out there? how about using a 6k winch?

I have a friend who uses a small 5K or 6K winch on his Tacoma. For the places he goes & the gear he carries, it has worked well for him. To my knowledge, he has never needed more than what the small winch would provide. If the choice is between no winch and a 5K pound winch - the 5K pound...

    Power Management with Fridge

My ARB fridge (50qt) will run for about 2 days on a single Odyssey battery with no external help (solar, running the engine, etc). This was not my starting battery, so running it down wasn't a huge concern. To keep it charged, I would run the engine for 15 - 20 minutes per day, which worked...

    Apple cancels Aperture

I can't say I'm sorry to see Apple let it die. IMO, (and we all know about opinions . . .) they need to focus their resources on innovation rather than putting a shiny new paint job on a beat up old car that wasn't that great to begin with.

Pronghorn Tacoma bumper: This looks interesting!

I'm pretty sure that they had the factory bumper on the front prior to the Pronghorn.

Pronghorn Tacoma bumper: This looks interesting!

I've tried to like it - but the aesthetics just don't do it for me. Sure, function over form and all of that - but for that much $$$, I want both. The bumpers they are building for the Jeeps look pretty good (IMO anyway). I just don't feel the love for the Tacoma version. I don't think my...

Discrete Solar Power System for Truck Bed & Topper

Really, there isn't much to it. I put a 100w panel on top of my camper about a year ago, & haven't hooked the camper to the truck (electrically) since. The cables are in place, I just haven't needed to connect them. The electrical load is relatively small (ARB fridge, LED lights, vent fan...

Driving a vehicle you dont like.

Unless it's the means to an end, then life is to short to drive a vehicle you don't like.

Storing tie down straps and the like

I roll them up and wrap a thick rubber band around the middle. OK - it's not really a rubber band, I use strips cut from either old bicycle tubes or old motorcycle tubes.

    Steering box bad?

How sloppy is sloppy? It's been a while since I drove a new truck - but I don't recall ever driving a Dodge pickup that didn't have sloppy steering.

    Another Newbie Question--Bringing Camper Home?

I did pretty much the same as everyone else - ran a couple ratchet straps to the jack mounts & hit the road. It was good enough to get me home where I installed the normal eye bolts through the bed.

    Overland Expo West, 2014

I talked with Roseann & Jonathan about the 2nd event a while back. Based on what they shared with me I don't think that "dilution" is a concern. The East show will compliment the West, rather than simply replicate it.

Any good uses for gray water?

Ours drains into a 5 gallon bucket next to the camper (via a simple PVC pipe that gets removed for travel), then used to either douse the campfire, or water a thirsty bush if we don't have a fire.

Best truck for a four wheel grandby

I get as good of mileage with my '99 Dodge (cummins) & FWC Grandby as some friends get with their much newer ('12??) Tacoma and FWC fleet. I usually only calculate it on longer trips that tend to have substantial highway miles & comparatively few "dirt miles" - but honestly, it's pretty easy to...

    Solar question

I like the low profile & ease of mounting with the flexible CIGS panel I bought from Global Solar. A single 100w panel keeps up with loads similar to what you have described. I haven't hooked the camper to the trucks charging system since I installed the panel - it keeps up indefinitely. As...

    Solar question

Shading isn't the only thing to watch for - the angle between the sun & panels will have a significant impact on performance. The closer the sun is to the horizon, the lower the output of the panel. Even if you have the panel at a 90* angle to the sun when it's low on the horizon, the output...

    FWC / Dodge 2500 4x4 height question

I can squeeze under my 8' door @ stock height w/FWC. And by "squeeze", I mean I rub the camper roof vent on the garage door weatherstrip as I go under it. If you're going in with kayaks loaded, I'd say go with the 12' door. Keep in mind that a 10' door will typically yield a slightly less...

    Experienced Overlanders...Customs Suspension Parts Reliability?

X2 on keeping it as stock as possible. A combination of circumstances (non-stock parts & a language barrier were the biggest ones) caused me a lot of headaches a few years ago in Mexico. While I was ultimately able to limp home - it made for a long & comically bad ride for the next 15 days...
