    Do you crumple or fold?

I fold tent and fly in a random, sloppy way, then place them into a size-small but spacious Eagle Creek duffle bag(top loading), along with all other needed tent parts, except the stake-driving hammer. Since my tents are used for car camping, there is no need to bother with stuff sacks. The...

Eastern Mojave Desert Exploration April 2017

Nice photos. Yes, wind is the enemy. It makes being outside unpleasant. I have cancelled trips at the last minute when the forecast was for 20 mph winds with gusts to 30mph.

LED flashlights that use regular batteries or rechargeable? (early 2017 edition)

To the OP: If the batts that leaked were from a name company like Duracell or Energizer, they will reimburse you for a new flashlight. Save the damaged light, and the leaked batts, contact them. I've gotten several checks over the years from Duracell for the equipment destroyed by their...

Very nice trip and report. Thank you for posting it. Please visit anytime...though you picked a good time of the year for DV.

Single battery setup vs Dual battery setup

I elected to get a Nat. Luna portable pack, since I knew I'd be changing vehicles sometime later that year. Thick batt cables permanently installed from starting batt, down the frame rails, and into the cabin under the driver's seat. Same group 34 batt in pack as under hood. Pack sits next to...

Compact Camp Chairs: The Ultimate Review

Normally, being tilted 40º up from the horizon is an unnatural feeling, uncomfortable positioning for me. However, for viewing the upcoming total solar eclipse, one of these might be just the thing.

EPA mandated gas can horror stories:

The CARB-compliant gas containers are pathetic. I agree that they cause more spills than a carefully used conventional can. You can get old fashioned NATO steel 'Jerry' cans, nice quality from Deutsche Optik, and I'm sure a few other places. The spouts that they and others sell work well...

    In car battery box charging

Right, My NL PPPack came with 6mm wires running to the starting battery, which is roughly between our 4 and 6 gauges in size.

Motion X and Gaia map questions

I have multiple large areas of USGS 7.5 topo maps(all of Death Valley, all of GSENM, more, more, etc) downloaded and "permanently" stored at max resolution from Gaia, and it's just a few gigs...maybe 8 or 10 GB...I can't get you the exact figure. I once downloaded (from Gaia) Google Road for...

    2017 North American Solar Eclipse - Planning/Discussion

I have been told by witnesses that the shadow traveling across the landscape can be seen, but you'd need to overcrank to slow it down, probably with an ultrawide or fisheye lens. On the idea of drones: There is no point getting 400 feet closer to something that is 250,00 miles away(moon) or 93...

Beating a dead horse, but.... Hiking boots?

My most recent pleasant discovery: Lowa. These are just above a sneaker(or 'trainer' as they say in the UK). You have to get the middle east inflected tan ones if you don't want hot sweaty GoreTex. https://www.lowaboots.com/mens/hiking/zephyr-mid?color=Coyote/Olive

    Maybe a Toyota convert....from jeep

"supposedly no rust" and "driver side rocker was cut and not replaced to keep rust from spreading" don't go together. If it has an auto trans and a new radiator do not accept any misbehavior from the trans. See 'pink milkshake'. Should be covered in this FAQ...

Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Road, Fort Pearce and Dinosaur Tracks

Thanks for posting this. I didn't know of that road before. Those dino tracks are similarly shaped to the ones in the GSENM near Left Hand Collet Road.

    New to forum/4runners

Agree with what's been said, except that a 4runner isn't big enough for 4 people and their camping gear. Unless the "camping gear" was ultra-lightweight backpacking gear. You need something the size of a Suburban.

Very nice quality video. I always prefer to go down the first time on the narrow, scary ones. What camera was used to shoot the windshield angle?
