    Tilting the cab

While I haven’t tried starting the engine with the cab tilted, I haven’t noticed a switch on our 99 FG

You can also close the doors once the cab is tilted.

    Tilting the cab

I know that this may make me look like an idiot, but I’m counting on the fact I may not fall far outside the norm. Before tilting your cab, open both doors. The difference is night and day. I’ve owned mine for 12 yrs and didn’t know this. I even increased the torsion in the lifting mechanism...

Keeping a pop-up truck camper cool

Good idea. We have a window unit installed in place of the pass through window. We keep it installed all the time. A Honda 2000 generator will run it. Window units are very inexpensive compared to roof top units. I think I paid $75 at HD at an end of season sale.

    Picked up a Northstar TC800

It's not that easy. There's a significant torsional load on those brackets. If you remove the bolts the brackets will twist out of location. Reinforcing them is a good idea if the wood is at all compromised. It's common to put a piece of flat stock metal all the way across the back side...

    Picked up a Northstar TC800

Yes those bolts are original and very common failure points when the wood gets wet—they carry the load of the torsion springs in the lifting mechanism

    Picked up a Northstar TC800

Just one vent over the stove. 3 vents does sound like overkill.

    Picked up a Northstar TC800

I’d use Eternabond tape on all the roof seams and over the seam between the bottom extrusion on the roof sides and the aluminum skin on the roof sides. We have a TS1000

2005 Fuso FG 140 Engine Replacement

Sorry, not much help here since I haven't done a swap in a Fuso but I'm looking forward to your account and pictures. :) How confident are you that the history of the replacement engine is accurate? Personally, I'd do a full check on the existing engine before proceeding; compression check...

    Are these things normal?

I agree it’s likely a warped drum but I wouldn’t rule out an out of balance wheel/drum with the imbalance initiated by braking. I would at least get all wheels balanced. If you search on ‘death wobble’ on this forum you will see that for some reason, FG’s are prone to violent shaking, I cured...

    Are these things normal?

Have someone drive beside you when things are shaking and see if they can identify a wheel it is coming from

    Are these things normal?

To clarify the glow plugs: I have a 4d34. The glow plug light only comes on at low temperatures (exactly when I haven’t calculated) but the glow plugs function every time I start this. I know this because I have a voltmeter in my cigarette lighter. When I turn the key to ‘on’ the voltage drops...

    Are these things normal?

I assume the 4d33 has glowplugs. Are they working correctly? Malfunctioning glow plugs can produce smoke on start up. I once owned a CAT 3208 without glow plugs. In temperatures below about 40 degrees, it would produce a cloud of smoke big enough to engulf a whole city block. It took about...

FG 649 2004 with frame rust - to buy or not to buy

No knowledge of the auto box, but FG manual transmissions almost always end up with syncro problems so you'll avoid that. Replacing driveshafts and brake lines is not something which commonly comes up on this forum. Any specific reasons why that was done?
