Timken is definitely the way to go. Plus if you have a press, you can replace the Timkens in your old set and put them on the shelf for the next 50k change.

I have an 08 with 93k miles on it and have had almost zero problems with it. I don't feel like I'm jinxing myself by saying it either. I mean I expect things at this point to happen, just sounds like the vehicle you have might have been worn out and not maintained too well before you got it...

Without actually hearing it, I would stick to the starter system and maybe battery volts first as it's much cheaper. If the batteries are not at full charge, it can keep the starter from completely engaging. Or, like you said, we know what a starter sounds like when the gears are worn. Loose...

Never buy a first year production model anything in my opinion! Considering that is probably the only 40k mileage TD6 in the current package, I would say that's not too bad actually. The new setups are always going to have software problems even if the engine has been in another vehicle...
