    Long Range Emergency Communications Set

Sounds like you have it covered as well The HAM is a Yaesu FTM350. The bottom left is a sat phone, iSatPhonePro (Inmarsat). You can get prepaid cards for the USA so no monthly bill if you don't want it. YOU can still make a 911 call without service on the Sat Phone. It support email and sms...

Good Setup. I think ultimately you need a variety of things for various COMM situations - HAM, among others, is one of the requirements in my book. Cell phone not shown :)

    $40 BaoFeng UV-5R Dual-Band Handhelds

Why debate these choices? These are so cheap and disposable it doesn't matter. I've had one fail and chucked it - bought another. Buy both :) In fairness all of my Yaesu HH units have been flawless (yadda yadda cost yeah yeah). There is a build quality difference as well as an ergonomic...

[UPDATED] Don't Update your Motion X GPS HD

I'm not aware of that ability in Mx. I suppose a question to them is in order. Avenza PDF is an app designed for PDF. It works well. I some times run it at the same time with Mx.

Motion X GPS HD v21 released

No, not Export. But there is a method for getting them all. If you want to grab them all, connect your iOS device to iTunes, locate the sharing section on the "Apps" tab (under your device) in iTunes, click Motion X - all of your waypoints and tracks will be visible to the right. Crate a folder...

Help me out here! GPS for Ipad Mini

Haven good recap. I think you should remove the word "service" in your sentence "Buy an IPad with WiFi plus cellular service (includes GPS) " It has a connotation that a cell plan is needed where it is not.

Updates are 1hz. For me I preload maps before I leave the house. There is no reliance on a cell signal. It is not required in any way.

    Best Offroad GPS unit

The iPad has onboard flash (64GB in my case) so space isn't an issue. The map tiles are downloaded via wifi or cellular from a map server of your choice prior to the trip if you are planning. Zoom varies by Map type... the levels in the example (same area in your samples) can be zoomed to 18...

Some iPad Mini Screen Shots using Motion X GPS HD. For those not familiar with Mx you can hide the controls for an even wider view. Not sure why the uploader made these smaller.... the images should be 1024x768 (iPad mini resolution) FULL Size can be found HERE

Your choice... If you have a data plan and network coverage they load as needed. If you're travelling to area without network coverage you can often "preload" maps for those areas depending on your chosen application.
