School me as I am about to purchase.

Your iPad (wifi) can still be a great navigator. You could get an external gps receiver and pre-load maps. Take a look at these http://forum.tlcfaq.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=26 amd http://forum.tlcfaq.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14

School me as I am about to purchase.

Did you take a look at this thread? http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/81117-Ipad-amp-InReach-a-30-day-field-test-of-navigation-and-communications For $2-10 you can purchase an app for your ipad or iphone that will run circles around a Earthmate PN-60W. Land Cruiser Virgin Here - Which 100 Series is "best"

1998-2001 isn't hobbled by the built-in nav. I specifically sought out the 2000 or 2001 because of that, and the strengthened front diff. Very few 2003+ non-nav USA models exist.

Land Cruiser Virgin Here - Which 100 Series is "best"

There is no transmission issue on the 2000's - Internet folklore at this point. The data on it is wildly incomplete. MY 2000 adds stability and traction control and an improved front differential. 2000+ no factory rear differential lock. 2003+ went to a 5 speed transmission. Lots of minor...

    PC Tablet & GPS puck.

Sounds convoluted connecting a puck to a BT adapter... I realize the OP has the puck already. If you have a wifi only iPad you can buy approved GPS receivers that work just fine. The 3G and 4G enabled iPad already have a GPS array in them some dont need an external receiver. Be advised that...

What Is The Best Topo Map App For iPad

If you want USGS mapping this works well http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/topo-maps/id306014271?mt=8 and the Topo's take about 15 secs over 3G to download. They can cache for offline use. It's not a super polished app and some things in the UI are quirky but for strait mapping with a GPS position...

    Laptop Screen Size

I'm using an iPad which has a 9.7" Screen and thats a lot of data in the cab. I would think a 14 would be too big.

Question about Garmin, Maps, and what I want to do

GPX Files I've started a section on tlcfaq to share gpx files and there are a few websites that are specific to waypoint share files. I kind of like to know what other like minded users have come up with. I've seen some on the other sites for areas that I know and they are sketchy. If you...

Lowrance Baja 540c not mapping correctly

This is a common misunderstanding about what and how an iOS device (iPad) works for GPS. GPS functionality does not rely on "service". Take a look at this if you're interested in the topic http://forum.tlcfaq.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=26 Back to your Lowrance issue... it seems to me that these...

Lowrance Baja 540c not mapping correctly

I hope I'm not being too much of a ******** but why do you guys put up with that? I dumped my my dedicated units about 2 years ago for an iPad 3G and haven't looked back. I got tired of fiddling with what didn't work. I know you have a big investment in these units but shouldn't it just work?

    First Purchase?

Don't misunderstand - I have a love for both 80's and 100's, having had both. But I'm enough of a realist to understand the pro's and cons of both to advise a new shopper what's better for "day to day work and occasional adventuring". There is no question the 80 is superior in extreme off-road...

    First Purchase?

The OP asked about "day to day work and occasional adventuring" As someone who has owned both - The 100 crushes the 80 in every way except pure offroad prowess... and that's a 7% advantage. A 100 will go 93% of the same places an 80 can. Dont forget 78% of all statistics are made up on the...

ready to pull the trigger on road based gps setup

The one difference is that several of the "stand alone" GPS apps put all the mapping on board the device - thats a differentiator. Other features that come into play are POI functionality. It's not a given that Apple with be better - some competitors have put serious effort into that...

new MacBooks announced, including a "retina display" model

MacbookPros haven't had replaceable batteries in three years. Apple has done quite a bit of engineering of those batteries - they are not off the shelf specials. To your point they are service replaceable.

    RAM X mount

ColoDisco you know that Motion X GPS doesn't require internet access for navigation use, right? You can pre download whatever area you like, as large as you like, in multiple formats restricted only by the Ipads storage. I'm not saying the MxGPSHD is perfect by any definition but its best of...

    Joy Factory Ipad Mount

Anytime you are using an arm you will get vibration/movement. It's a lever and and small inputs are amplified. The longer the arm the worse it is. I suppose depending on your esthetics and needs, compromise is bound to creep in. Bottom line keep the bracket to vehicle mount as short as possible.
