A few apps are starting to incorporate NEXRAD. Look at the app Grid here http://tlcfaq.com/main/2012/08/ipad-overland-navigation-system/
The only issue is that the NEXRAD data on the apps needs a data connection - if you're in Podunk with out internet service you wont see the weather data.
BTW...
Have to agree that iPad gps hasn't let me down once. Certainly back up paper maps are prudent but it sounds a lot like ' you kids get off my lawn' when someone's says watch out for fog. :)

Thanks for the nice word Mike. I'm glad it's working out for you.
Paul Jensen - Sometimes having everything right in your face is too distracting - esp the Yaesu 350. It's dimmest setting is too bright for night driving (IMO).
Good feedback off-roader. I have always poo-poo'd the BT dongle approach as it's one more device to manage. And BT is so interference prone. Having said that I can understand why someone with a wifi only device may not want to reinvest in an ipad so the Bad Elf or Dual are good solutions.
Should be pretty good - most guys seem to think they are ok. We use 2m on the trail exclusively and having an HT is nice when you are spotting for someone... instead of trying to yell at them you can use the radio to talk them through.
The down side to an HT is the power an ostensibly the...
Thanks guys. Would love to hear about your setups and experience.
I'm putting together a comparison of the apps available which I hope to be done within a week or two. Check back on the blog or follow @tlcfaq (http://twitter.com/tlcfaq)
I used this crimper when I did my dual batts: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003V8BEUI/
I paid 17.21 at Amazon - The price bounces up and down all the time.
These help as well. http://www.amazon.com/Hobart-770151-Shears-Welding-Cable/dp/B001FOPXK2/
Anthony Thanks for the details - I have those changes in the grid. Take a look at it and PM me if you have any thing to add or subtract. I dont want to derail this thread more than I already have. :)
You are welcome Doug. Dont sweat it, I wasn't judging. Some times trial by fire is a good way to learn what you dont know. I think if you spend some time familiarizing yourself and Linda with the operation of the iPad and MotionX GPS HD you will find out very quickly how brilliant it is.

Well most of your difficulty seems to be knowing the program. For example if you pinch-zoom or pan the map the app assumes you want to look where you moved the view to... to recenter and keep 'you' there tap the caret button (between the + and - buttons). You can tap the caret multiple times to...
I would probably go Subaru. If its going to be a transportation device and not an enthusiast ride. The Allroad is almost a cult car now and it requires a lot of TLC. Having owned a 2002 from new as well as operating the web site allroadfaq.com I can tell you first hand. Once you have an Allroad...
It looks like you are all set on TLCFAQ - if you cant logon let me know and I'll force it.
Some of the items I already have on the list a couple of them I don't - Great help sir, thank you.
According to the data sheets from Lexus the smog recirc was 2003+... does your 98 do that?
If you didnt see it... Catch the link at the bottom of the article. It jumps to a FAQ on the iPad that answers most of the practical questions about gps and 3G/4G.

I'm sure some of you already know but for others, I've been using an iPad in car since they were released in 2010. iPad has been an integral part of my navigation setup off road as well. I get a lot of questions about what I do and how I do it so I created a blog post about it that may help you...
Good points hoser. I would have certainly welcomed some of them (features) when I purchased my LC but I choose not to hassle with the AHC coming off my allroad which had adj height suspension. I wouldn't mind your input on a grid i put together about the differences in the LC versus the LX if...
