thanks - clean is what i was going for! the remote mounting kit for the kenwood comes with a hinged bracket that i just screwed into the headliner. i drilled out the center of the mounting bracket big enough to pass the cable through and then drilled a corresponding hole in the headliner...

goals: - hidden main radio body - hidden external speaker - easy access without further clutter of dash area (already i have too much stuff there) - balanced look with other electronics mods - allow easy upgrade to the 710 later to get APRS - eventual tie-in with carputer for on-screen APRS...

i agree solid state is the way to go, just couldn't quite justify the up-front cost myself. also, i was unclear on if the powergate had a manual switch to force combining for self jump like the auto-relays we've been discussing? powergate is also made in the US i think and looks to be a quality...

how would this work in a dual battery setup? you could obviously put one on each battery, but when vehicle is on and the batteries are paralleled how would that affect the overall "intelligence" within this thing that supposedly knows of "approaching battery failure" and other features it has?

i used an MV50 for several years when i had an XJ with 31" x 11" R16 tires and it worked flawlessly. i then hard mounted 2 of them in my WJ and that really worked well for about 9 months on 33" x 11.5" R17 tires. then they both died within a month of each other. so just don't expose it...

they recommend a winch rated for 1.5 time your GVWR i don't know about specific bolt ons for your vehicle, but armor is always a good place to start, make sure key components are covered (transmission, transfer case, etc). beyond that best advice is to go on some smaller trips and get to know...

nice shot! yeah we just did a run with a guy with an old YJ with 2" lift and he rocked some 4+ trails, sometimes it wasn't pretty, but he made it cuz he has tons of seat time. however, sometimes a little extra flex, or another inch of tire will enable you to tackle an obstacle without beating...
