Mickey Thompson or Cooper A/T tire decisions

Does it have to be an AT? The Mickey Thompson MTZ gets rave reviews and the new Cooper Discoverer STT Pro looks like it is their best tire ever. I'm on my way right now to buy a set of the new General Grabber X3.

Show me your DITCH LIGHTS or ROCK CLEARANCE lights

Here are my upper lights. Note this taken right after I installed them. After several trail runs and messing around with them at night - as I mentioned before the top pods are now turned. The outer ones are at 90 degrees and down, while the inner ones are at 45 degrees and down (but less do to...

    GMT-800 Suburban lift options?

Rayra - you mentioned a few things in here that caught my eye. 1) I have CST keys (assuming Ford for the lift) and custom Eibach shocks. My Avalanche is sitting level at 39.5" on each corner with 285/70-17s that are worn to being under 32". My rear springs are stock, though on an 02 Avalanche...

Show me your DITCH LIGHTS or ROCK CLEARANCE lights

Rayra - I like that setup - think I need to explore that. I swapped out my fog lights for LED pods down low by my winch, added a front bumper 34" LED light bar, a 50" LED lightbar up top, and then 4 pod lights on my roof rack that point at 90 and 45 degree angles to the sides and down. I have...

Cooper Discoverer STT PRO - Deep Look

Multiple sites - Jeep forums, Full-size Truck forums, Cummins forums, the comments are starting to show up. As for the manufacturing change - I do global supply chain for a living, I spoke with someone I know who is connected to all of this and he let me know about the Pro Comp molds being...

    Fording Depth vs. Snorkel Height

Well I have a snorkel on my Avalanche - and while you guys have mentioned the science behind dust dispersion and the military prep for water - no one has yet to mention the worst of them all - silt. Fender deep, talcum-like silt that invades every possible area it can. Hitting a 2' deep 1/4 mile...

Cooper Discoverer STT PRO - Deep Look

Hey Guys - I'm in the market for a set of tires and have been researching my butt off on what to get. I live in SoCal, and my rig is also my daily driver (2002 Chevy Avalanche 1500 4wd NFE). I was pretty convinced on getting these Cooper's as they sound great, but then a few things happened...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

No - the rivet isn't impeding anything. At that point the handle is solid so it won't go down over the base. It looks like it should from the pics and just looking at it from the side - but once you get over the top of it - no dice. What's odd is on the EMS website it states "Latches must go...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Thanks and yah - trying to figure this one out. That's a good idea you have, I'll look into that. The other obvious option looking at these latches is some sort of U pin to go through both of the holes on the latch and base.

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Quick question I forgot to ask - which 4-6" lifts are you putting in? I'm seriously trying to figure this one out. I can afford to do it - just can't afford to be wrong about it.

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

The 1/2" tie rods are a well known weakness on these trucks. Adding in the bigger wheels and tires the added weight of overlanding gear, and the added stress of being offroad - it's a weak point that I wanted to address. If you buy these tie rods - go to alligatorperformance.com - by far the...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

I had promised some more detailed pics of the new rear bumper with dual swingout. Here are the latches I got from EMS Offroad. While they are stout, I have noticed that they will come unlatched (not all the way, but the lever has been lifted after some serious bumping on a trail. If I were...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Did a few other things to the Avalanche over the weekend. Installed a new K&N fuel filter and a new fan clutch. Reason for the fan clutch is: 1) It was the original (173K miles), and 2) Occasionally my A/C would blow warm at lower RPMs. I also purchased a Factor 55 Pro Link for the winch as it...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

New front end parts have finally arrived. Install tomorrow........... New Cognito upper control arms - 2" more droop and will allow for the exploration of a coilover front end...................... New Rare Parts tie rods - 1.32" thick - waaaaaay beefier than my stock 1/2" tie rods. For...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

I haven't really looked around for them. I know I looked at KBB on mine not too long and in stock form it was still at $12K - it's an NFE. I'm the original owner on mine. Yes - doing what I'm doing now - I wish I had gotten the 3/4 ton. Oh well, working with what I have as I love my Av. Yes...

Thanks - much appreciated. More updates coming................................

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Thanks for the info. The "thin plate" comment was offered by some seriously credible guys in the industry - even more credible to me since they don't make anything for my rig and don't plan to - figured I could get an honest assessment that way. But yes, I have seen some of those others on some...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

The way the S&B CAI boxes come normally is: Bottom Open, Top Open (but has the clear plastic lid that screw down - no gasket), Facing Truck - Right Side open to attach CAI tube to (4 bolts), Left Side open - to draw air. What I ended up getting from them for the snorkel was: Bottom Closed, Left...

Jack of all Trades Avalanche Build Thread

This is how I did mine - no receiver hitch - winch is mounted to a plate that is welded between the frame rails and hidden behind the bumper tubes which are also welded to the frames rails. This style coupled with the 2" leveling and 285/70-17 tires drastically improved my approach angle.

Spare / Extra Fuel - Worth Carrying? (East Coast)

Agree with Rayra. My Av also has the 32 gallon tank. I was carrying 7 gals of water and 4 gals extra fuel. With the new dual-swing out I carry 9 extra gallons of both water and fuel wherever we go. A friend of mine with a 1/2 tank of gas in the middle of Death Valley - cracked his gas tank on a...
