If you don't know how to spot scams on Craigslist, I'd look other places to buy things.
If it looks too good to be true, it is. And NEVER send money or accept checks for anything you find on Craigslist.
Good idea on carrying the spare alternator. Vehicle won't run long with out it.
They probably aren't officially called poverty pack, I just reference them that way. (no tint, no tach, vinyl seats, steel wheels, etc)

Deep water in an XJ is troublesome.
The alternator does not like it, and sits low in the engine bay.
I've had issues with that just hitting deeper puddles on the road after a rain.
