The AT Habitat is basically just a big tent on top of the truck and will be just as noisy as any other RTT. A wedge style RTT or pop up would be one of the better options for camping frequently in winds and allows you to position the point of the wedge into the wind to reduce the effects on the...
What made it miserable, wind noise and tent material flapping? If so those are both going to happen with any soft style RTT. Hardshells might be a little better with less tent material and a fixed upper roof to limit movement. A ground tent with sloping walls and a full coverage rain fly will be...
Thanks for the quick replies. I have 20 gallons of kerosene in sealed cans that’s been sitting in my basement for a few years. I used some for the initial runs to test my heater but wasn’t sure if it would be suitable for long term use.
At $2-3000 cheaper the GFC is definitely not in the same ballpark for pricing. It has a different focus and set of features which make it much more desirable for me and how I use my truck.
Here’s some options if you decide you don’t want diesel and would rather swap in a commonly available American V8.

The fact is that the cheaper boards are not the same quality as Maxtrax. Maxtrax are definitely overpriced based on what they probably cost to manufacture but I was willing to pay that to have a product that would reliably work without breaking every time I used them.
If weight and size are important the GFC is a no-brainer. If those aren’t the primary concerns the Alucab will be on the truck sooner and offer the convenience of leaving bedding inside it.
You’re travelling around the world, not California, seems like a pretty minor concern. You’re also adding bumpers that aren’t legal and exceeding the GVWR of the truck so the gas tank is just one more item on that list.

Here you go, in CA and everything. I agree it’s expensive but for a trip around the world it’s not much money for a lot more fuel capacity.
An extended tank would probably be a good idea.

If the two tracks on the bottom of the tent are mounted on the long axis you can turn them to the short axis and trim off the extra length. If they’re already on the short axis you’re out of luck without buying new ones. Depending on tent orientation 48” is not a problem.
I’ll be looking at the Mastercraft Courser CXT for my next tires. It’s hard to beat $670 for a new set of tires, especially if they perform as well as people say.
Maxtrax have been the best in my experience. I went with orange so they’re easier to find in mud, snow, etc. Wait until Ebay does another 15-20% off day and buy from there.
My bad, didn’t catch that. I agree though, the Summit looks like it would feel more cramped as well with the lower opening roof coupled with the bed raised.
Becoming (and surviving as) a SEAL in harsh conditions around the world is a cakewalk compared to building trailers in a climate controlled shop and going home each night. Everyone knows that.
