The bed platform is a single piece of plywood hinged on front. It will fit a 3/4 full sized or RV mattress (48" x 75"). This leaves about a 16" gap in the back to climb in and out of the bed. It will have pneumatic struts on the sides to push it up, while walking around below. Because I made...
I was worried about how to open and close the top from the inside with the bed in the way. Looks like the upper bed will work as long as I open and close the top from the outside.
It would be nice to keep the mattress, blanket and pillows up there, as well. Also the push up bed would keep the tent material out of sight and the bottom would be nice and tidy. Just pull the bed down to use.
Well I can't stop thinking about a push up bed. I just have to figure out how to access the front lift mechanism to make this work. I'll have to experiment with my lift system a bit first, but below is an example of a VW pop up bed.
Could someone post a picture of 4 Wheel Camper's upper bed platform without a mattress on it? I like their slide out bed platform, but I don't understand how it works. If it was just two pieces of plywood, wouldn't there be a lump where one slides over the other? Also there's an option that...
Good catch and they do stick into the interior a bit when up. The way they are designed, you can see that they won't go over center. The good part about this is that in combination with the tension from the struts, the top is very stable front to back as well as side to side. The bad part is...
I like the way you hide the piano hinge along the seam. Most people put the hinge on the surface of the platform, which doesn't look as clean. I'll probably do a similar folding platform in my rig to allow seating over the front bed rail of the Gladiator. I'll also need vertical spacers...
The hatchback struts are in! They work but I'm not comfortable with the amount of pressure on the plexiglass window. The weight of the hatch was between two strut sizes and I picked the heavier one. Looks like I'll drop down to the lighter strut. Pretty easy to change out though.
Thanks for the help. I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew with my build. Every time I think I'm getting closer, there's another puzzle to solve. I'll use the 3/4" conduit and center the pivot! Again, you've got an incredible looking build.
Thanks for sharing such a great build! I'm working on my own lifting mechanism now and am going to build a conduit stabilizer similar to yours. Do you have any advice or recommendations? What size conduit did you use?
